Best New Bands alum Ice Choir is set to follow up 2012’s excellent Afar with Designs In Rhythm this week. His latest effort is a shimmering body of ’80s pop with a more adventurous layering and texturing of synths that pulls you into a dream-like aesthetic and snaps you out of it artfully with intricate musicality. Whether it’s slow and R&B-tinged like the title track or more groove-based and bouncy like “Variant,” each song has interlocking rhythms that oscillate the energy with a great sense of timing and temperament. Some will have you grooving along and others will have you flat out dancing, but you will be engaged regardless. Add the earworm melodies of the gauzy vocals and the aesthetics are that much more irresistible. Listen.
Designs In Rhythm is out 9/9 on via Shelflife/Fastcut. Pre-order it here.
