The prospect of a Donald Trump presidency is so terrifying that it’s sparked 30 Days, 30 Songs, a project in which a different artist releases a new anti-Trump song every day until the election. We’ve already gotten songs from Death Cab For Cutie, Aimee Mann, Jim James, and Franz Ferdinand, and now Thao Nguyen of Thao & The Get Down Stay Down has gotten in on the action. In her song “Before You Vote,” which includes lyrics like “I lie awake/ Oh my god no/ No fucking way,” she refers to Trump as a “tiny-minded man of few syllables and a temper” and a “bullshit wolf in outsourced sheep’s clothing.” Here’s what Thao has to say about the track:
I had a hard time writing a song about Trump as a presidential candidate because I never thought I’d have to do such a thing. I tried to avoid the wholesale condemnation of the Trump supporter, as a nod to the real desperate economic straits that lead some to his toxic snake oil. I hoped instead to reason with them through measured observation, snide jokes, and panicked disbelief.
