Badass new-wave survivor Chrissie Hynde recently reconvened her band the Pretenders, recording the new album Alone with lead Black Key Dan Auerbach producing. When the band played the single “Holy Commotion!” on Colbert last month, Auerbach was on hand to help out. When they were the musical guests on Conan last night, Auerbach wasn’t there, but Hynde didn’t need him. She and her band played the album’s headrush of a title track, a song that makes the most of Hynde’s fast-talking spoken word and her vivid boho-life memories. She projected both enthusiasm and grizzled authority while singing it, and you can check out the performance below.
Alone is out now on BMG.
