Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s recent “Treasure Maps” was part of a four-song compilation benefitting the Southern Poverty Law Center. The EP also features new music by Adam Torres, William Tyler, and Drive-By Truckers leader Patterson Hood. Today we’re sharing Hood’s contribution, a spine-tingling ballad called “Airplane Screams.” It was produced by Chris Funk of the Decemberists, as Hood explained via email:

I was honored to be a part of the SPLC project and to be on an EP with these other amazing artists. I went into the studio with my friend Chris Funk to record a song called “Airplane Screams.” Kyleen King came by and put down an entire string section with her viola and violin (and was amazing). It’s a song I wrote long ago and have always wanted to record and this seemed like the perfect time and situation to do so. It’s all for a great cause and I hope that you enjoy it.
