Sam Craighead is a musician from Columbus who has spent the past decade-plus quietly releasing some incredibly beautiful low-key indie rock. Whether sitting at a piano with Heavy Mole or strapping on a guitar with Feature Films (whose 2015 debut album you really must hear), Craighead has long been a master of crafting understated, melancholy pop songs that bloom into breathtaking beauty before you know it.
Craighead is about to release a solo album called The Tuesday Night Music Club, which tells you something about his sense of humor but little about his sound. For a primer on the latter, check out “Regality,” an advance single from the new LP. It finds Craighead deadpanning in his lower register over depressive piano pop, the downcast vibes buoyed by a punchy drumbeat, subtly propulsive guitar work, and a lush brass section that ushers the song in and out. Like most of his music, it’ll sneak up on you. Below, watch director Mike Postalakis’ video for the song, starring another Columbus music treasure, Kyle Sowash.
The Tuesday Night Music Club is out 5/19 via Head2Wall Records. Pre-order it here.
