This morning, we woke up to the awful news that Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell died last night at the way-too-young age of 52. Soundgarden had just played a show at Detroit’s Fox Theatre, and a local Detroit news station has called Cornell’s death an “apparent suicide.” If that’s true, it only makes the whole thing even more terrible. And perhaps it’s significant that Soundgarden ended last night’s show with a song about death.

Soundgarden finished last night with the Badmotorfinger deep cut “Slaves And Bulldozers.” The song’s chorus is this: “So bleed your heart out / There’s no more rides for free / Bleed your heart out / I said, ‘What’s in it for me? / What’s in it for me?'” And they reportedly merged the song with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “In My Time Of Dying,” a song they’ve covered a few times. Knowing that, it’s possible to imagine that last song as a kind of goodbye. Below, watch a fan-made video of part of that “Slaves And Bulldozers” performance, as well as a few more videos from last night’s show.

Soundgarden were scheduled to headline the Rock On The Range festival in Columbus tomorrow night. The fest released this statement:

“We are devastated to hear about the sudden passing of Chris Cornell last night. He was a true hero to music, the voice of a generation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the entire music community. The voice of an angel, now watching down on us as we celebrate and honor him all weekend long.”
