Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

Often we get accused of posting things for traffic, and I can assure you that is not the case! That’s because there is surprisingly little rhyme or reason to which content performs, at least around here. As you might’ve gleaned from articles about web publishing, success hinges too much on Facebook’s algorithm, which no one completely understands. We don’t even share most of our articles on Stereogum’s Facebook because “they” say you’re not supposed to post too many links. The reason I bring this up is because this week we published many thoughtful essays, a bunch of interviews, some controversial reviews, good and not-so-good-but-still-notable tracks of all genres, even our big 50 Best Albums Of Year So Far list … and yet none of those were viewed as much as this 2014 article about Kid Rock that went viral yesterday for some reason. That’s how it goes in publishing — we know most of the content we produce will appeal to niche readerships, and once in a while something you’d never expect blows up on Facebook. Just wanted to put that out there, since it drives me nuts when we’re accused of posting things for clicks. We only post news we think is interesting and features we believe in! If trendy things automatically resulted in traffic we’d post a photo of Lana Del Rey with a fidget spinner.

If you go back in the archives, there are plenty of articles about The Chainsmokers, J Cole, Ed Sheeran, Logic, Charlie Puth, even Future being mediocre.

“No hug? Why no hug?”
“Jerry didn’t Hug?”
“JERRY DIDN’T HUG?”
“I missed out on the hug.”
“He missed out on the hug.”
“You gotta hug.”

This is the appropriate reaction to a stranger interrupting you mid-sentence to demand a hug.

Band releases two albums you love and two albums you like. Then band gives you three new songs, and you’re into one but not the other two. “Remember when they were good?” seems like a bit of an overreaction.

Also got applaud Stereogum’s decision to post a billion Arcade Fire roll-out stories yesterday, then switch it up and spend all day today shitting on the new song. Infinite content!

i know this piece is well researched and well written, but i cannot get over the fact that all it’s doing is cutting down a woman for being mediocre. all of this this work was put in just to be sure more people knew that katy perry isn’t doing a very good job. men have been pointing that out about women (especially in music) daily and forever. i am applying the “would this click bate article have been written about a man” test here. i do not think it passes.
