Lorde Clarifies Her Ride Or Die Status With Taylor Swift

Everyone knows that Lorde is part of Taylor Swift’s squad. Lorde has defended Taylor’s honor from Diplo and performed “Royals” live with her, but an interview that aired on Australia’s Sunrise morning TV show yesterday had many questioning if Lorde was a true ride or die friend.

In the segment, which you can watch here, Lorde answered a question about what it was like to meet her musical heroes after the success of Pure Heroine by saying, “The second you think too hard about it, you’ll just go insane so it’s best to be like, ‘We’re in Wonderland. That’s just what happens around here.’ Like, also, I don’t hang out with these people at all.”

Although she didn’t mention Taylor by name, an image of Taylor Swift flashed across the screen, and the interviewer quickly interjected, “But hang on, you’re part of Taylor’s squad, all the magazines tell us!” Lorde responded to that by rolling her eyes and adding, “You make friends in different places. But I think for the most part, I’m not like calling up my idols for advice, necessarily.”

Of course, the media took that to mean “I hate Taylor Swift and we’re not friends anymore,” so Lorde was forced to clarify her ride or die status in a note on Twitter. Although she thinks the whole “squad” thing is kind of stupid, yes, she does consider Taylor to be “a dear friend. I love her very much.”

Phew!
