Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

This weekend Stereogum is a media partner for Day For Night Festival in Houston. I thought I was done with festivals for the year, but this one is stacked — NIN, Thom Yorke, Solange, St. Vincent, James Blake, the Jesus Lizard, Perfume Genius, Tim Hecker, Priests, Laurie Anderson, Cardi B, GY!BE, Kaytranada, Jessy Lanza, En fucking Vogue (!), and more — so James, Gabriela, and I will be there in person. Follow us on instagram and we’ll tell you if Thom Yorke debuts another new song. Scroll down for this week’s worst responses to Josh Homme kicking a photographer in a face.

People who act like dicks when they drink should do themselves a favor and stop drinking. Not to mention Josh has already had a heart attack. I’m not even sure Homme even knows why he did this, and that should disturb him.

But wait, there’s more! I thought some of you might be curious about how our poll compares with the critical consensus. So I measured our top 20 against the current top 20 from albumoftheyear.org’s running aggregate list (which may very well have changed again already) in order to come up with a Stereogum Spin Score. The numbers you see here are the differences in ranking between our list and the aggregate. So Kendrick gets a 0 because he topped both lists, Lorde gets a -2 because she’s two places lower on our list, Vince gets a +1 because he’s one place higher on our list, and so on. This helps you get a sense of what made our list unique, both in terms of the albums we loved more than the average critic, and those we weren’t as enthusiastic about. Or you could say it’s who we overrated and underrated, depending on your feelings about these artists/albums.

Fleet Foxes, +25
Jay Som, +20
Big Thief, +18
Julien Baker, +16
Alvvays, +14
Slowdive, +8
King Krule, +8
The War on Drugs, +7
Fever Ray, +7
Perfume Genius, +6
The National, +3
Vince Staples, +1
Kendrick Lamar, 0
Lorde, – 2
LCD Soundsystem, – 2
Mt. Eerie, – 2
Father John Misty, – 5
SZA, – 7
Sampha, – 13
Tyler, The Creator -13
St. Vincent, – 18
Kelela, -24

And there are a few more that go off the chart: Stereogum’s “Underdog of the Year” is (Sandy) Alex G. Though he only finished at 19 in our poll, that’s substantially better than the aggregate, where he’s still struggling to break out of the Honorable Mention tier (so at least a +30). Our most slept on artists? Jay-Z, Thundercat, Richard Dawson, and Kelly Lee Owens. Their albums are all in the top 20 on AOTY, but didn’t get enough votes to even crack our top 50 (so at least -30 for each of them).

In conclusion, I have now scientifically proven that y’all slept on St. Vincent and Kelela, and you should all be very ashamed of yourselves. Wait, no, that’s not the point. The point is that we are a unique community with diverse tastes, and our list reflects that, and we should be proud of it! Yay, Listmas!

Merry Listmas!

Here are the results of our highly informal but still obviously incredibly important 2017 Gummers’ Poll (not to be confused with The Gummies, which you still need to vote in, because it’s your civic duty!) The numbers next to each album represent the total score for the album and the total number of votes it received. This gives you a sense of who ranked high because of broad support from the commenters, and who leveraged a smaller but more enthusiastic following.

The score was determined by assigning 5 points for each 1st place ranking, 4 points for each 2nd, 3 for each 3rd, 1 for each 4th or 5th, and 1 for each 6th-10th. Ties were broken first by greatest number of votes, then greatest number of 1st place rankings (then 2nd, 3rd, etc., as needed). The only pure tie was between Pallbearer and Power Trip near the bottom of the list; I would have had to reformat to give them both 45th place, so I put Pallbearer first because I liked their album more. As Bjork would say, “Sue me all you want!”

As alvvays I did my best to account for every vote, and to tabulate accurately. And other than the aforementioned tie-breaker, I exercised no editorial influence on the final list. That being said, I am by no means a numbers guy or a computer guy, so surely something is fucked up somewhere in there. We’ll just have to live with it.

I hope at least some of your favs did well in the final tally. It’s been a pleasure to spend another year discovering, celebrating, and bickering about music with you all. Without further ado, your Top 50 Albums of 2017:

01. Kendrick Lamar – DAMN. (186, 69)
02. The War on Drugs – A Deeper Understanding (115, 44)

I’ve been reading this site for 5+ years now and only just this week had the guts to join in. This is my favourite music site and I love the community that’s built around the comment section.

Never in my wildest dreams would I think I would get number 1 first week in I feel like MJ.

Hopefully I can add something constructive to the commentariat.

Thanks for being so welcoming!

Next time don’t stand so close to the stage, DUH! Also his kick was more weak than a pat on the back! If the photographer was so hurt then she should’ve went to the hospital immediately instead of later, DUH! Also she said she take photos for shutterstock? shutterstock is a free platform for anyone in the world to sell things photo’s, music, video, etc. I love how this blog mis-informs it’s readers. Dude is wrong for what he did and it’s not acceptable, but being that close to the stage, s— happens. What does Shutter Stock have to say about there employee being kicked, shouldn’t shutterstock file suit?

He said sorry. Case closed. I once pushed a friend when I was drunk. He was hurt. I said sorry. This does not make me a piece of shit. What Homme did was wrong. Everybody agrees. But he said sorry and I really don’t believe he will kick somebody in the teeth in the near future. You guys can exagerate this whole situation out of proportion and it isn’t helping anybody.

He’s got a point. Drunk people so stupid things. It happens. It wasn’t malicious or spiteful, he turned and casually kicked her camera.
She is fine. A sore neck and a bruised on her face is not a reason to go to the ER. He apologized, let it go people.

HE IS COMPLETELY DISGUSTED WITH CERTAIN TYPES OF PHOTOGRAPHERS, WHO ALMOST NEED TO UP TO THE STAGE TO TAKE A GREAT PHOTOGRAPHY, THEY ARE NOT IN THAT SPOT TO HEAR, THEY ARE THERE JUST TO MAKE MONEY WITH ARTIST WORK IN STAGE

Millennial pink is a real thing. My wife works in product design for a fancy toiletries company and they can increase sales for any line of product by adding that weird pale pink to the color scheme.
