Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

It was the Shut Up, Dude before Christmas and all through the blog a last minute Spidey gift messed up everyone’s Best Of ’18 lists. Before that, this week we looked ahead to next year’s most anticipated albums; Tom doled out two 10s, a 9, and two 8s as The Number Ones entered the ’70s; and Robbie Williams won a pool. Your Stereogum elves will still be posting during the holidays/probable government shutdown, so make sure you charge your phone before heading to your relatives.

Can we all agree they aren’t real gum readers unless they’ve jumped into the comments section to rank post Pinkerton Weezer albums or discuss Israel?

There’s definitely been times when I would’ve been too high for a Nardwuar interview.

“Nobody really looks good there!” really? all honestly seemed to be pretty good natured. I mean he still gave him a ‘doot doot’. how bad could things have been if you still get a ‘doot doot’?

DAMN. Blonde. To Pimp A Butterfly. For the last few years, a consensus pick for AOTY emerged long before the ballots were cast and counted. But 2018 has been a little different. With many of the decade’s dominant acts either sitting out or striking out, we were left with an unusually open field and the freedom to name our own future classics rather than having them ordained from the outset. Your lists elevated upstarts and underdogs who punched above their weight, paid tribute to veteran acts that proved once again that they’re in this for the long haul, and sought justice for slept-on works of genius from a variety of genres. What follows is one of the most eclectic and distinctively Stereogum lists we’ve ever produced. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on how the rankings shook out.

For those who are new to the game or have forgotten the rules, this list was compiled by me and Chazpod using the lists posted in Stereogum’s Best Albums of 2018. Even if your comment was buried way at the bottom five days later, we counted it. All in all we tallied up votes from something like 180 comments, assigning 5 points for each 1st place vote, 4 for each 2nd, 3 for each 3rd, 2 for each 4th or 5th, and 1 for any other Top 10 placement. Unranked lists were counted as though they were ranked out to 10 places (we’ll assume your subconscious knew what it was doing). For the first round, albums with fewer than 10 total votes were excluded. After that, albums with less than 10 votes but enough points to place on the list were incorporated as well, allowing some acts with small but fervent fanbases to place as high as 35 on the final list. Many placements were decided by a single vote. Next to each album you will see it’s score as well as it’s total number of votes.

Unlike years past, where I’ve made the list on my own, I feel more confident than ever in the accuracy of our results. This is because Chazpod did so much to check and double-check results with me, even producing his own independent tally for all of the albums listed below so we could compare results. It’s no exaggeration to say that he did just as much work as I did, and that this list would have been a hot mess without him. However, he humbly declined my (repeated) suggestion that he do the honors of posting the list. I’m super grateful for his work, and you should be too.

Without further ado, here are your 55 favorite albums of 2018.

It’s kinda fascinating to watch meanspirited toxic-ass dudes like Kanye learn psychological/self-help jargon, then master it just enough to use it as a way to make themselves perennial victims in any and all situations.

It’s so dope to call out toxic masculinity, and then in the very next post, threaten to beat the fuck out of someone. Super woke, super consistent, super self aware. Also, shut your hole, soda pop. I bet that post was paid for by the Association of Miso and High Fructose Corn Syrup Brotherhood Coalition.
