Choice To Make – “Think Twice” & “Composure”

A couple of months ago, One Step Closer, a hardcore band from the desolate central Pennsylvania city of Wilkes-Barre, released an EP called From Me To You, and it fucking ruled. And One Step Closer, it’s worth noting, are not the only exciting band from Wilkes-Barre, which is exactly the type of place where great hardcore can come from. It’s a small city where people are pissed off and where they have to make their own fun. (I say this as someone who went to college in late-’90s/early-’00s Syracuse, a place where hardcore was basically the only thing thriving.)

Choice To Make come from the interconnected cities of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, and they make simplistic, brutalist old-school NYHC-style chug. It’s maybe the most elemental form of mosh music we have, and they’re good at it. The band hasn’t been releasing music for long; they debuted with a Bandcamp demo last year. And now they’ve got two tough, focused new songs, “Think Twice” and “Composure,” that clock in at between one and two minutes apiece. Check them out below.

You can get “Think Twice” and “Composure” at Bandcamp. And since Scranton is now part of the conversation, here’s a discussion question: Which character on The Office would be most likely to lead a hardcore band? I’d say Kevin, but he seems pretty busy with his Police tribute band. The right answer is probably Dwight, if only because Creed would be more likely to sing for a bleary-eyed Eyehategod-style sludge-metal band. But I bet Erin would be good at it, too.
