Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

Greetings from Indio! Jk, I’m not at Coachella. Fuck Coachella. (If you’re going, though, have fun and wear sunscreen.) This weekend visitors to the desert can expect a headline set from Childish Gambino, and a new film from Childish Gambino, and free sneakers (?) from Childish Gambino. Gambinochella will also host a rare stateside Aphex Twin set. I saw him last night (first NYC show since CMJ ’97) and it was incredible. Hopefully Rich will get to talk shop with DJ Idris Elba).

I wish she’d just release the album and let the public decide. For someone who wants to disappear, she certainly continues to draw attention to herself. Which won’t matter if the album is good. But I think we can all agree.

The thing that always set Jim Croce apart from the rest of 70’s Singer/Songwriter bunch from me was his ability to create such dynamic characters in so few words. The protagonist of You Don’t Mess Around With Jim, I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song, Rapid Roy, Operator, Working at the Carwash Blues, Alabama Rain, and One Less Set of Footsteps all have vastly different experiences, but none of them devolve into caricature. They are fully rendered sketches of interesting characters scattered across America. Leroy Brown is probably Croce’s most famous character and contribution to the pop canon. I don’t see Leroy Brown as a cartoonish. He’s just getting what comes to him. It never occurred to me that Leroy Brown was black. I never thought about his race either way. Croce’s eye for detail and emotionality come out stronger in his next Number One though. I’ll do nothing but heap praise on that song when we get to it, but for now I’ll just say Bad Bad Leroy Brown by the Great Great Jim Croce is a solid 9.

Giving a 28-second concert is very unprofessional and rude and he could gain a reputation that may negatively impact his career.

Roger Ebert came to our film festival every year. The festival, and Ebert, championed Asian films before the continental United States and Europe caught up. We miss him more than words can say. He put Grey Poupon mustard on his spam. He gave so much exposure to first-time filmmakers. This guy’s passing left behind a void that will never be replaced in the dying profession of serious film criticism.
