Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

This week in Twitter outrage, Frank Ocean addressed rumors about his PrEP+ club night, Elton John defended Ellen DeGeneres being friends with a war criminal, and the Black Madonna and Japanese Breakfast responded to critics of their participation in an Amazon festival.

In music news, we got bits of info on new albums from Beck, Gang Starr, Matt Berninger, Coldplay, the Black Lips, and Duster. Coldplay’s is “experimental.”

As for longer reads, we celebrated 30 years of Blue Nile’s Hats and 10 years of Fuck Buttons’ Tarot Sport. We reviewed Netflix’s perfectly watchable Rhythm + Flow, Clipping’s artfully gruesome There Existed An Addiction To Blood, and Desert Daze’s classic-’90s-album sets from the Flaming Lips, Ween, and Wu-Tang Clan. We looked at the chart rivalry between SuperM and Summer Walker. And The Number Ones reviewed the #1 hits from the month my sister was born.

Congrats to Dave Matthews Band on their nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and to all the acts on our annual Best New Bands/Artists list, which is a higher honor.

This faux “woke” opinion that tall, good looking straight white men can’t feel depressed is honestly just one of the worst takes i’ve seen. It just reinforces the issue of toxic masculinity. Hey you! Don’t you feel things! Just go be privileged and successful and if you’re not successful then WHY NOT?! It just leads to more repression and stigmatization of mental illness and yes, as a gay man, I understand that marginalized groups deal with mental health issues even worse bc of their oppression but it doesn’t take away from the fact that depression, like addiction, does not discriminate.

Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
“Good-morning,” and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich—yes, richer than a king—
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

– “Richard Cory,” by Edwin Arlington Robinson

Depression knows no color, class, or gender. This is why it’s vitally important to give others the grace we desire for ourselves, and not succumb to ecological fallacies that tempt us to ascribe group tendencies to individuals without listening to them.

When Elton John makes a mistake, it’s “I’m Still Standing.” When George Bush makes a mistake, 1 million people die. Not really the same thing, Elton.

And this on the same day that a song about a dancing 17 year old girl, written by a 31 and a 32-year old man, gets a 10/10 on Stereogum? Wow!

Yes, a lot of creepy and rapey men will use those words. Still doesn’t change the fact that the song is about a guy being confident that the “good girl” will finally yield to his “moves”.

I was also a depressed white guy and I didn’t know some people felt shame about being white and depressed. I also didn’t know it apparently takes james blake to assure people that being white and depressed. This is the most pretentious bullshit I have read all day. I hope you get over your depression like I tried. But please for the love of god stop with this oversensitive stupid reasoning.

Mentioned this briefly on another thread, but I was in New Orleans for my bachelor party this weekend, and we were eating at this delicious restaurant called Seaworthy. We were upstairs in a sort of private dining area and my friend breathlessly ran in screamed “Win Butler is sitting at the bar downstairs!” For 75% of the bachelor party folks, this was nonsensical and attributed to too the fact that we had been drinking for 7 hours.

But I, little indie boy that I am, immediately sprinted from the room, down the stairs, and creeped super hard. I then, thinking I was very sly but knowing in hindsight how drunk I was, saddled up to the bar right next to him and grabbed a seat. He was chatting with the bartender, and so I just studied the drink menu, ordered a drink and sat quietly. Eventually I introduced myself, and asked his name, to make myself seem more casually. He couldn’t have been nicer, recommended some oysters, which we promptly ordered a dozen of and split. We talked about New Orleans and basketball and I never mentioned Arcade Fire. As I was leaving, he asked if I was there celebrating anything, I told him, and he brought me in for a bro hug and congratulated me on my pending nuptials. It was nuts. Couldn’t have been a nicer dude. Then I went to the casino and lost a bunch of money. The end.
