I haven’t been shy about talking up Crystal Stilts: The Brooklyn quartet, who got together back in 2003, and recently added ex-Vivian Girls drummer Frankie, concoct a dark, minimalist, melancholic sound, frontman Brad Hargett making like Ian Curtis fronting a Phil Spector-produced down-tempo Chills. Their forthcoming Slumberland full-length Alight Of Night, an ’08 favorite, is great, as evidenced by the detached surf haze of “Crystal Stilts,” the absolutely gorgeous (but then disappearing) “Prismatic Room,” and now “Shattered Shine” and its mopey, harmonica-and-feedback-entwined pop shuffle. The track first appeared in janglier, less cohesive, more lo-fi form on the band’s aforementioned Woodsist reissue. This upgrade works wonders on an already good song.
