New Centro-Matic Video – “Rat Patrol And DJs”

The video for “Rat Patrol And DJs” takes place in Denton, Texas, outside the local bar/club Dan’s Silverleaf. The resulting clip was shot with no edits after 16 takes, but as you’ll note, there was post-production involved: The animation’s the work of one Mark Ray, i.e. Matt Pence’s drums didn’t actually sprout a tree (though he does go through some real-time wardrobe shifts) and while Will Johnson has a great voice and often beautiful lyrics, his mouth wasn’t really leaking stars, stripes, or psychedelic shapes.

Wonder if they drank any Cappulido on set.

In November, Centro-matic hits the road with brother band South San Gabriel. If you’re keeping track, both bands are led by Johnson, share members. The shows are in support of Centro and SSG’s split double album Dual Hawks, released in June via Misra. (Maybe you recall “Christmas 83 (Make Fun Of My Sweaters),” a track produced during the Dual Hawks sessions.) As far as specifics, Chris Flemmons of another Denton act, the great Baptist Generals, will be playing between SSG and Centro on all shows except the first Fun Fun Fun Fest date, which is Centro-matic by their lonesome.
