Frog Eyes – “Lear In Love” (Stereogum Premiere)

The exuberantly layered “Lear In Love” is the first Frog Eyes to remind me of Katy Perry. It’s the repeated “I kissed a girl” toward the end of the track. Not much, no, but Carey Mercer’s too sharp and thoughtful a lyricist and purveyor of pop culture in addition to the tomes not to be nodding that way for some reason or other. Before we get to the momement we pass through other words worth unpacking: “I am the Bad idea, / I am the Gold torpedo, / Dilettantes in the dark make an entrance in the dark. / And she picked this night, but it doesn’t mean she had a choice, / Oh the bear hunter’s wife fears the claws that will rake through her home, / And if everyone will judge she shall weep as a partitioned stone: / She’s all right,” etc. That and female vocal harmonies (a repeat Paul’s Tomb motif), bacchanalian tilts, one hell of a hook. “Lear In Love” arrives toward the end of Paul’s Tomb: A Triumph, after we’ve heard the possibly connected/maybe Shakespearean “Lear, In The Park” and the previously posted 9-minute opener “A Flower In A Glove.” Take notes.

Frog Eyes – “Lear In Love”

“And: ‘Who said the gate was shut, the gate was only made for you,’ and: / I kissed a girl, she was the only one who seemed to own a shard of light, / She’s all right, and it’s all right.”
