The Lodger – “The Back Of My Mind”

Orange Juice and Aztec Camera-referencing Leeds pop trio the Lodger recorded their third album Flashbacks with longtime UK producer Richard Formby, who also turned knobs for Wild Beasts’ Two Dancers, played guitar on Spacemen 3’s Recurring, and worked with Sonic Boom on Spectrum, etc. There are plenty of noisy, sky-melting clangs and drifts filtered throughout opening track “The Back Of My Mind”‘s classic-sounding smart-guy pop. If you’re familiar with the group, it should sound different than what you’ve come to expect. It’s a definite step forward. Or, as vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Ben Siddall put it: “I like ‘The Back Of My Mind’ a lot because it was a totally new approach for me, to layer up track upon track of feedback and repetitive guitar drones.” Despite those drones, it stays sunny, even in the midst of Siddall’s downcast melodies.
