Sightings – “Weehawken” (Stereogum Premiere)

Sightings have been a singularly noisy force for a long time. When I covered them in a piece called “No-Wave’s Newest Wave” in the Village Voice five years ago, they were already firmly entrenched in the landscape. Entrenched, but as I mentioned in my review of 2004’s Arrived In Gold, “a shadowy entity in comparison to critically lap-danced Big Apple ‘noise’ acts.” Which is why we started our 2007 BTW piece on Mark Morgan & Co. by stating the obvious: “It would be pretty misleading to call Sightings new — the NYC trio’s six albums deep into their post-Pussy Galore DNA shredding.” But it was that partially Andrew W.K.-produced sixth album and outsider favorite Through The Panama, their most cohesive, that felt like it might lead to a leap beyond the noise scene to a larger audience. That was probably also Brah/Jagjaguwar’s thought when signing the band who’d previously put out records with Load, Psych-O-Path, and Fusetron, to release album seven, City Of Straw. Always the contrarians, Sightings turned around and recorded their most bracing, bare-bones, and challenging album since 2002’s self-titled debut. And it rules. The thing is, when they hit track six, the anti-anthem “Weehawken,” the vibe suddenly pivots. Basically, it’s the song that introduces us to the collection’s especially crushing final triad (“Weehawken,” the levitating “Hush,” and the dynamic closer”Sky And Mud Below”). This one reminds me of the Hold Steady melting.
