Trash Talk – “Explode”

Trash Talk’s live show is a force, especially compelling in small spaces where their creatively violent (in a joyful way) fans have just enough space to extend their arms and toss mic stands, shoes, other fans. The sense of controlled danger is one of the things that attracted me to hardcore in Junior High: Trash Talk’s Death Metal Pizza set at SXSW was one of Austin’s best for this and other reasons. Those other reasons involve those spitfire songs soundtracking the goings on … If the Sacramento quartet weren’t writing things like Eyes & Nines’ ultra-heavy “Hash Wednesday,” the spiraling/insanely grooved “Rabbit Holes,” or the shout-and-response anthem “Explode,” the kids wouldn’t be trying to crash down the fences. Trash Talk’s third album is their most honed, assured, expansive, and memorable. Jump in with the aforementioned “Explode.” It’s epic considering their usual song lengths.
