Stereogum’s Favorite Artists’ Favorite Things In 2008
We love year-end lists, it’s really a shame that no one made any this month. To remedy that, we asked a handful of our favorite artists what music they dug most over the last twelve months. No Age, Grizzly Bear, Girl Talk, Antony Hegarty, Robin Pecknold, Sara Quin, and Kevin Barnes are among the familiar names participating along with respected folk from more outsider realms. Because we are nothing if not flexible and so good at copy editing, we’ve allowed these contributors to submit frenzied, unranked lists of albums, songs, or something else entirely. For example, Marissa Nadler wrote a Neil Young concert review while Carey Mercer shared an essay about a Spanish amusement park. Kanye’s list of high-end sofas wasn’t ready by deadline.

Ok… I am generally know by most my friends as a person who drinks too much coffee and then never shuts up. It is super embarrassing when I catch myself. In Brussels the other day, I was really bad… I was showing people in the crowd all my disgusting blisters on my hands from touring too much. Mary, I am sorry. I was ok tonight in Amsterdam, I think. Anyway… We just finished touring in Europe, which is the land of zero wifi access (seriously, it is so so hard to find wireless here!!!), which means I can’t give lengthy descriptions of each thing on my list (sigh of relief?)…. Man, this song is so good. I LOVE the hospitals. It is like the beach was rad, you took a nap, woke up then all the sudden a storm came in and blew all your shit in the water. Now you’re FUCKED. So nice and smooth then it hits you hard, the Hospitals aren’t fucking around.
Deerhunter – “These Hands”
My favorite song off of Microcastle. The beginning gets your hopes up, then it gets even better and better. I really like the whole record though, it is good all the way through, I recently listened to it on a plane trip to europe. I woke up somewhere in the middle and it was the perfect sound for waking up kinda confused with a fat man snoring next to me.
NODZZZ – “Is She There”
Just a great song. I can’t get it out of my head and I am trying, really but it won’t leave! I guess that is a good thing, maybe it will be stuck there forever until they write some
more great tunes, which won’t be for long I am sure.
Gun Outfit – “Your Will”
One of the best songs of the year for sure. It really is a completely solid track. Makes me wish i wrote it!
Jonny “Khaen” Olsen – “Meng Tub Tao”
This is actually a song from an old friend of mine i met when i was still in high school and we used to skate together and go to shows. He lived with me for a bit after that and I got him a job at this vegan Thai restaurant. He got super into Thai culture and started playing this wooden instrument called Khaen and moved to Thailand. He is a huge star over there now because he is the only American playing it. This song is so weird. I am in love with the melody in the chorus.
Fucked Up – “Golden Seal”
I blasted this song through this really small broken amp I have from the 60’s and also through my regular stereo at the same time and the results were sick. Just a great shredding ambient track, play loud.
Animal Collective – “Street Flash”
Incredible song. how do they just get better and better and better? Definitely impressive and motivating to say the least… I just listened to it again, guess what? It’s even better than before.
Crocodiles – “Neon Jesus”
A great new band from San Diego. This song is a real good kinda early eighties electro punk pop jam. It is super catchy.
David Scott Stone – “When I Had Yr Love”
A good old pal from LA puts this nice piece of ambient freedom on display. Again, listen
loud, it is a great moving work of sound.
Telepathe – “Chrome’s On It”
Busy and melissa killed it on this one. Can’t tell if it’s a club banger or some gnarly art, maybe it’s both, that is why they rule and this song is on repeat.

You know that screen in the level select map where you can view your equipment? for example you can select a leaf and if you so then when you go to the level you will have a tail etc.. well i filled my equipment list all the way up with hammer suits. i am pretty sure the hammer suit is the best suit you can have.. besides the p wing. those hammers go through walls and shit. i guess mario three brings me to a sub list:

Blackout Beach – Skin of Evil
I’ve listened to this a dozen times and still can’t figure out how this can be so indulgently arty and yet so easy to enjoy. Totally unclassifiable but file next to other lofty unheralded classics: Crime & The City Solution’s Paradise Discotheque, Wall Of Voodoo’s Dark Continent, and Eyeless In Gaza’s Caught In Flux. I’m in awe of this record, but fear it’s just too good for the rabble.
Grouper – Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill
A perfect record, one long mournful sigh … muted guitar strumming, delay pedal on acoustic guitar sound, sedate female vocals singing songs, but it all goes by in a blur if you don’t listen close.
Burial Hex – Initiations
Demonic howling, horror noise electronics, new age synth washes. This is early Industrial nonmusic-music with black metal imagery, another oddly enjoyable & well crafted bizarre freak out of a record.
Blessure Grave – unreleased MP3s
Welcome back So Cal deathrock (Christian Death’s Only Theater Of Pain anyone? Hell Comes To Your House comp?). While a lot of people are referencing the 80s now (see the whole new roster over at In The Red), Blessure Grave actually has the vocal melodies and songs to make it transcend.
Blank Dogs – free stuff on his blog
Another of the aforementioned 80s referencing bands, DIY Pop/Post-Punk riff book with garbled helium vocals taking a backseat to the undeniable guitar hooks. The effect is a kind of ambient pop. Looking forward to the upcoming In The Red double LP.

James Ferraro Multitopia / James Ferraro K2: Chameleon Ballet
The music is good on these two LPs, fucked-up dreamlike weird cassette music, but I picked these two albums for their cover art and liner notes, which are some of the best ever.
Nagisa Ni Te – Yosuga
The return of the masters. Someday they’ll get their due. Melancholy Japanese folk-pop arranged with the pacing & patience of a funeral doom band.
Marissa Nadler – Favorite Stuff
I have to admit I spent most of the past year and a half writing and recording my new record, and didn’t get to listen to a lot of music. I was focused on the process, and also didn’t leave the house much to go to see many shows. Lately, my ears have really been turned on. Alela Diane’s The Pirates Gospel (2007) and Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love (1985), recently, have been my complete obsessions. Neither of those records came out in 2008, though. This list is a conglomerate of 10 music related things I liked. I am sure there are many equally great things that came out this year, but I haven’t gotten to listen to them yet.
Live concert: Neil Young @ DCU Center in Worcester, MA
Neil is on tour in support of his release Sugar Mountain Live At Canterbury House 1968. Neil played a 13 minute version of “Cortez the Killer” at this show. Heavily distorted electric guitar carried this epic song, and his voice was as bell clear as it was 30+ years ago. I saw him as a teenager, an acoustic set replete with white votive candles stitching the stage. I thought nothing could replace the memory of seeing him play “Long May You Run,” switching back and forth between two mammoth organs. I have to say this version of Neil was equally as enchanting. He knows how to keep an audience thoroughly entertained, alternating his older oeuvre with some of his newer, environmentally minded work.
The encore was “A Day In The Life” and jaws were dropping all over the stadium. This may be making a stretch, but there was some Sunn O))), Boris guitar drone work going on. Then there was Peggi (his wife), up there chanting, playing what looked like a marimba, her singing reminiscent of Nico’s Marble Index phase. It was a pretty bad-ass encore. I expected him to get out there with an acoustic guitar and play “Sugar Mountain.” The strangest thing was that I looked into the sea of faces, and instead of seeing lighters, I saw a multitude of flickering lights, which I realized were cameras taking videos. Times have changed, but at least we can go watch this encore on Youtube now. For eternity or until the internet is different.
On the new release, there is a short clip where he is audibly writing the guitar melody of “Winterlong,” and he says, “I guess I should have some happy songs.” Who knew we were such kindred spirits? A beautiful version of “Sugar Mountain” included in this release as well – the song when I first fell in love (with Neil).
Documentary: Patti Smith: Dream Of life – A film by Steven Sebring.
I went home from this film and painted for the first time in four years. They show rock goddess Patti Smith, talking to her mother, saying “Only for you mom, would I do a medley.” I always expected her to have been some orphan child, emerging with tattered rags, emaciated, spewing gospel out of her mouth like chimes. Who knew her mother had a cow collection? Her dad walking around in a Roskilde Festival t-shirt? Then there is her playing with good friend Robert Mapplethorpe’s ashes in her hand and describing them as sea shell fragments. I don’t think it matters where someone comes from, and I was happy to see she had nice parents. This is to me the anti-Don’t Look Back. She is the rock and roll queen, and my all time biggest inspiration. Far more beautiful for her lack of regard for the finery and glitz of a lot of legendary divas.
Live concert: Fleet Foxes @ The Middle East in Cambridge, MA.
Obviously the Fleet Foxes are getting plenty of shout-outs, and I say deservedly so. I didn’t really know what to expect. I hadn’t heard their CD yet and just jumped right into the live show. It was dead silent in the packed room, as they erupted with some of the tightest harmonies I have ever heard live. It was an incredibly beautiful and sincere set, and I was raving and raving for months and months about it.
Beach House – Devotion
Again, I say deservedly so for the Beach House lovin’. Devotion is a beautiful, moody, atmospheric record. The layered harmonies are heavenly, the slide guitar divine. Standout songs on this record for me personally are “You Came to Me,” “Turtle Island” (the ethereal high vocals are stunning at the end of the song), “Heart Of Chambers.” It’s truly a hypnotic album. My absolute favorite of the record is “Astronaut” especially the Beatlesy yoohooo at the end.
Little Annie And Paul Wallfisch – When Good Things Happen To Bad Pianos
I recently played with Little Annie at the Brainwaves festival, a very diverse music festival in Massachusetts, where I got to see Meat Beat Manifesto and some really wild acts. This Little Annie record is a covers record. She is one of the most enchanting live performers I have ever seen. Her eyes are insanely magnetic, her frame frail, and her voice always wavering, smoky. Reminiscent of Marlene Deitrich but far more tragic. I guess I would call her a torch singer, but she seems so much more than that.
Larkin Grimm – Paplar
I think this is an incredibly gutsy record. I have always thought Larkin sounds great just with her Appalachian dulcimer or classical guitar and her voice, alone in a room. On this record she proves that she is capable of taking on many roles. I have known her for years, and its a true leap. We kind of came up together, both anomalies in Providence, Rhode Island’s noise heavy scene. I do love me some Lighting Bolt, though. Paplar is beautiful at times and insane at other times. Incredibly varied and showcasing a profound understanding of world music rhythms. My favorites are “They Were Wrong,” with the line “in my mind you are already gone.” “Ride that Cyclone” is obviously the catchy upbeat one, and catchy it is. I love “Anger In Your Liver.” One source that shall remain anonymous said to me that it sounds “like music that people in cults listen to before they go out and commit mass murder.” So, not for everyone I guess, but I love it.
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan – Sunday At Devil Dirt
I love “The Raven” and “Seafaring Song.” Reminds me a lot of Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads but in a good way. The whole record gets a bit long for me, which is why I picked my two favorite tracks. There are some gorgeous moments on the record.
St. Mary’s – Hear Those Voices Call
It’s for people that like Twin Peaks and Julee Cruise’s Floating Into The Night. Extremely ethereal and ambient. This is now available from him, hand made, hand numbered, and limited edition 500 copies. If you thought Joel from Death Vessel sounds like a girl, you haven’t heard anything yet. But, that is a compliment (to both of them). He is a friend of mine so I can say it. He has a prettier voice than most of the ladies I know. 🙂
Kate Bush – Hounds Of Love
Yes. This is from 1985. I just can’t believe it took me this long to discover her. I haven’t listened to anything but her in weeks. It’s fascinating that the first 5 tracks of the record are these accessible pop hits, and the second part of the record conveys “the story of a woman who is lost at sea, facing death by drowning, and the tortured night she spends in the water” (Wikipedia). I wonder if Britney’s follow up after Circus will have the first half as the hits, and the second half about her mental deterioration and recovery. Again, a lot of people hate Kate Bush. I don’t understand it, but hey. Taste is subjective.
Alela Diane – The Pirates Gospel
This record came out last year, but I discovered it this year. It’s amazing. I like how unpretentious this record is. It’s stark and skillful and simply everyone should buy it.
Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes) – Favorite Everything
Barcelona, March, the only day we have ever had completely off while traveling in Europe: Melanie and I had been in Barcelona with Destroyer and Frog Eyes in 2005. We had been in Barcelona for twenty-five minutes. We walked around the Sagrada Familia and that was that. This is the kind of experience that makes one bleak. So, on our one day off ever in Europe, I voted for something else, something far more cultural, like the amusement park on top of a mountain that overlooks all of Barcelona. My friends Reg and Amber had been to Tibidabo Amusement Park on their honeymoon and raved about it: there was a Spanish Freddy Krueger, and a Spanish Jason, and even a Spanish Chucky! This confirmed one of my own controversial experiences: seeing a Spanish theatrical version of Garfield: The Movie: they really are funny in Spain — like Lorca — he would have loved Spanish Freddy.
Poor Ryan: he wanted to go see Barcelona, but when we started describing Spanish Freddy, we hooked him to us. Wise seer Carolyn Mark almost puked at the mention of the plan, and departed to relive her 19-year-old Barcelona Bohemian days, with a bottle of wine tucked under her arm at 11 in the morning.
I couldn’t remember what the name of the mountain or the amusement park was, and few Spaniards speak the heavily coded and contextual language of roller-coasters (“the zipper, the salt and pepper shaker, the log ride”), so I just kind of guessed that it was on the top of the mountain.
We took the subway to the foot of the hill, and when we got out of the tube we still couldn’t be sure that there was indeed an amusement park at the top of the hill. The cost of taking trams to the top of the hill was 6 Euros. “No thanks,” I decided, even though wise Mel was waving around the cash. “It will be great — a half-an-hour hike, and then Log Rides!” So, after this Iago-like persuading, we started our ascent. After an hour-and-a-half of climbing through beautiful, affluent Barcelona neighbourhoods, the houses abruptly died out. We entered a park. We had no water. The park signs proclaimed that we were entering some hiking trails. These trails continued to ascend, continued to climb. We were drenched in our own perspiration, and we only had my cheery optimism to convince us to not turn back. We had come so far, I argued, and surely the rides were just over that ridge. We walked on a large trail that overlooked the city, and I started to go insane — I wanted to get to the top of the mountain as quick as possible — no loping, easy grades for us. I convinced my delusional bandmates to follow me onto increasingly narrower animal trails, and at times we were actually crawling under vines and thick vegetation. I started to think about Spain, and its recent transformation, and I started to meditate on the possibility that roaming gangs of Spanish criminals, besieged by the E.U., must surely operate up here, like banditos waiting for a few pasty fools to crawl into their den. I began to fear for Melanie’s life, and I began to suffer heart palpitations and extreme sweats, because I love her, and I grabbed a stick with a clubbed end, and when I turned back to explain to her that this stick was to assist me in my climbing it was clear that she understood everything: if these banditos were to attack, I would fend them off with this clubbed end while she raced back to safety. I never telepathically communicated anything to Ryan. At this point I saw a large humanoid creature out of the corner of my eye — was it an ape or a bandito lookout? We rushed, we hurried, we were lost in the jungle, and a brown furry humanoid was tracking us — an ape, or a hairy bandit in a brown leather trench-coat that carried switchblades and a pellet gun.
We started to hear something, a groan, a scream, one thousand screams, all of the prisoners of the banditos being prodded and sliced and harried. This scream became rhythmic and a mechanical shudder entered its timbre — they were bulldozing the prisoners’ bodies, or cycling around a huddled mass on zippy motorbikes, shooting uzis into the air. I was seriously scared of these banditos. I love Mel — she interprets the world for me. She started hooting and yelling in joy. She screamed, happily, “Oh my god! It’s the sound of a rollercoaster! Oh my God we’re so close!” I looked straight up, up into the mystery of the cream-clouds, through the vegetation, and the most beautiful sight arced into my vision of Spanish Mediterranean sky: a slow moving red airplane, too slow to actually be flying, just circling, attached to something by a red rod, attached presumably to a centre-post, attached because it was, in fact, an amusement ride, this fact evinced by the hordes of Barcelona punks leaning out the sides, throwing ice cream lumps into the jungle, ice cream lumps showering us. We were so close! We started running through the brush, our arms help high as marathon racers finish their trek.
Three hours later, we emerged out of the underbrush to the bemusement of the gatekeeper, me thinking of Kafka’s “Before The Law” (the gate was made for you!), Mel thinking about rides and how much she loves rides, Ryan thinking about truffles and squid and what Carolyn was probably eating right now. The rides cost us each 45 Euros. We didn’t see Spanish fake Freddy, because I was too spooked from the banditos.
