DJ Mixes Usually Suck, But…

Leave it to Erlend Øye of Kings Of Convenience (Norway’s answer to Simon & Garfunkel) to reinvent the genre.

10. Erlend Oye – 2 After 909 – Justus Kohncke/Intergalactic Autobahn (Acapella)
11. Erlend Oye – The Black Keys Work (Phonique Remix)

I’m sort of sick of the Smiths-tronica jawns floating around these days, but Erlend does a nice job with “There Is A Light” on that Royksopp semi-mashup. Better than Schneider TM’s version. Minizza’s funky take on KOC’s “Winning A Battle” could pass as a Nintendo soundtrack. Another highlight is Alan Braxe (Stardust) and Fred Falke’s “Rubicon,” a retro jam that will have you shaking your ass like it’s summer ’82 and you’ve just done a line with Madonna in the Danceteria bathroom. Buy the album here.

If you’re not familiar with Mr. Øye’s previous work (or you hate throbbing baselines), check out the first Kings of Convenience disc. It’s a complete 180 from the DJ stuff: beautiful harmonies and acoustic finger picking from two Norwegian uber-nerds. Eliza Jane and I saw the duo perform at Angel Orensanz Foundation a few years ago. It was such an incredible venue … we decided we wanted to get married there. Not surprisingly, it’s way too expensive. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick got married there. They have lots of money.

For you New Yorkers, Erlend will be DJing at APT on Tuesday.
