Expensive Looks – “Proud Looks”

The ocular/visual theme threads runs long with this, the latest single from NYC bedroom sound shaper Alec Feld. (See also: that cycloptic promo photo.) The project’s called Expensive Looks, the song’s called “Proud Looks,” and it comes from a cassette release called Dress To Impress. That connects interestingly to How To Dress Well’s Tom Krell, both insular bedsit producer titularly obsessed with looking good in others’ eyes, all while tucked away in isolation. “Proud Looks”‘ chirps and whooshing intro breaks into something chipper and psychedelic, like pulling back the drapes in a dingy room on a sunny day. It draws on ’60s sunburst pop like Caribou did with Andorra, though insists on its bedroom setting with a dry, time-keeping tapping from 1:45-3:30, and then melts back into some sort of primordial ooze before a boomerang back into the sun.
