Jonathan Boulet – “You’re A Animal”

Last November we met 21-year-old Aussie skater kid Jonathan Boulet via his “Community Service Announcement,” a catchy and chilled out, honeyed-guitar tropical-pop line dancer that came stacked with a busy tom beat and an Album Leaf remix and a video about MURDER by a group of kids with squiggly Yeasayer faces. One year later, one year older, 22-year-old Aussie skater kid Jonathan Boulet preps his second LP, still untitled though announced via the grammatically confounding “You’re A Animal.” He’s still riding his board with a softer heel than the skaters making wavves in Cali, whether you’re talking Nathan or Odd Future. “You’re A Animal” comes fast and hard, but fast and hard in the most polite, melodious way imaginable. The production’s richer now, pushed into every edge of your speakers. The toms are faster, the announcement more urgent. Boulet’s calling you names, but can’t even commit to the proper indefinite article, which tempers the tantrum. It’s tenacious for this man, but he’s clearly a sweet man. It’s a supercharged rallying cry for nice guys. And still supergood soundtrack material.

Boulet’s second album is due sometime in 2011 via Modular. In the interim, his self-titled debut Jonathan Boulet was just released to iTunes, where you can buy it.
