SXSW 2009: Friday’s Sets To See

Friday’s tough. If your legs are getting tired, it’d be more than OK to arrive at the Pitchfork/Windish Bash early and stay put, but Hot Freaks @ Club de Ville isn’t shabby either. Depending on how late you were out Thursday — and how many weird SoCo drinks you consumed for a certain person’s birthday — you could see Wrens at high noon and Handsome Furs at 1:30 at Hot Freaks (where the Thermals and the Hold Steady play later) before making your way to Pitchfork for Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Woods, School Of Seven Bells, Wavves, Dirty Projectors, etc. We caught a bunch of the PPM bands yesterday, but if you haven’t, there’s also a super Kill Your Idols/PPM show at Club 1808 with Gun Outfit, Lucky Dragons, Abe Vigoda, Soft Circle, No Age, and Mika Miko (who were awesome last night), etc. The masochistic side of us says we should give Peter Bjorn & John a chance at redemption at the FADER Fort (Women play before them). For anyone interested in metal, Friday’s the night: If you play your cards correctly, you can see Brooklyn power trio Tombs at Room 710 then the mighty Slough Feg (!) and Absu (!!) at Spiro’s Amphitheater for the WFMU/Aquarius Records showcase. If you’re neck’s still in one piece at that point, go see legendary Obsessed, Saint Vitus, and Hidden Hand (etc.) vocalist Wino and Olympia USBM dark foresters Wolves In The Throne Room at Southern Lord’s Emo’s Annex party. WIITR play the same time as crusty Atlanta double-drumming quintet Kylesa (@ Red 7), so that gets tricky, but you could catch a bit of Wolves, run to Red 7 for a portion of Kylesa’s midnight set, and stick around for Skeletonwitch. (You might’ve noted that Metallica’s not in that mix … that’s because they play opposite Absu, who’ve created one of the best metal albums of ’09, and Death Magnetic-era Metallica created one of the… well…) For the non-headbanging, there’s everyone from Beach House and Dinosaur Jr. to the Hold Steady, Okkervil River (and Shearwater), and a bunch of Slumberland bands.
