Ben Chasny recorded the last Six Organs Of Admittance album, the gorgeously dense Luminous Night with Randall Dunn, who’s manned the boards for Earth, Wolves In The Throne Room, Sunn O)))’s Monoliths & Dimensions, to name a few. The collection included a number of guests, a variety of new sounds. The 2009 album pairs beautifully with Asleep On The Floodplain, Chasny’s new 10-song collection of home-recorded, mostly acoustic tracks. In the liner notes, he mentions a couple songs are solo acoustic guitar with no overdubs; that a couple are solo guitar with some added harmonium. At times there’s that personal, late-night lullaby feel of 2003’s Compathia and the similarly solo-feeling darkened lo-fi vibe of For Octavio Paz. That said, you’ll also find moments of sky-melting psychedelia, midnight drone, eerie repetition. As far as subject matter, Chasny pulled from his youth spent in Elk River: You get that, easily, with songs like “River Of My Youth.” And “Dawn, Running Home” recalls right running home in the morning after a sleepover in a friend’s tree fort. “Hold But Let Go” seems to suggest remembering the past, but moving forward: Time doesn’t hold still, even for our most important moments and cherished memories, etc. Listen.
Asleep On The Floodplain is out 2/22 via Drag City. Compatriot and 200 Years partner, Magik Markers’ Elisa Ambrogio, adds “the beginning chant” to “River Of My Youth.” “S/Word And Leviathan” was inspired by the writings of Catherine Keller. He was inspired by Bachelard’s “poetics of reverie” throughout.
