The Pains have graduated from their appreciation of sweet ’90s-Slumberland-era indie pop with Belong, enlisting producer Flood (Smashing Pumpkins) and mixer Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine) for their second LP Belong. The result is a bigger, more enveloping and shoegzer pop with a lower center of gravity than before, essentially splitting the difference between those two aforementioned band points. These are fresh influences for a band that is proud of its influences. This is not your older brother’s the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart*. It’s a good look.
