Earlier this AM we mentioned the Killers covering Joy Division for the Control soundtrack. While we’re talking films, how about Runnin’ Down A Dream: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Peter Bogdanovich’s Petty documentary? It’s a four-hour film (epic) that includes rare footage, interviews, concert action, etc. Talking heads will included Dave Grohl, fellow Wilbury George Harrison, Jackson Browne, Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder, and, of course, Rick Rubin, the Heartbreakers themselves. A sort of Petty-inspired sausage party! Oh, wait, Stevie Nicks is in there, too … She only sounds like a man. Just kidding.
Runnin’ Down A Dream premieres 10/14 at the New York Film Festival and then runs commercial free 10/29 on the Sundance Channel (with later rebroadcasts), but if you like the thing enough to take home, a 3 DVD/1 CD set’s available on Warner Brothers 10/16, exclusively at Best Buy … tres Eagles. Oh, wait, that was Wal-Mart and Sam’s. We had Don Henley confused with Billy Corgan. Anyhow, the Best Buy-exclusive package includes the four-hour Director’s cut, the 30th Anniversary Concert in the band’s Gainesville hometown, and a CD of recordings/rarities from the film (some previously unreleased). Not quite enough? A related coffee table book will available 11/1 on Chronicle Books.
Marketing blitz aside, dude’s definitely had jams … We kinda think of their songs in terms of the characters Petty created: Still love the tripped Alice cake, the bummed L.A. “Free Fallin'” chick, and plenty of their other American girls. Do you have a favorite?
