Though she’s performed as a member of Cold Cave and Parts & Labor (and has collaborated with Jesus Lizard’s David Wm. Sims, Lee Ranaldo, etc.), Sarah Lipstate’s most impressive works are the solo guitar soundscapes she’s created as Noveller over the past few years. The results are reminiscent of Roy Montgomery (a big compliment) or Loren Connors (jamming with Branca), among others, but she’s carved out and refined a particular, recognizable aesthetic. “Ends,” a track from her forthcoming Glacial Glow, is a good example. Its Chris Habib-directed video, featuring ocean cinematography by Matt Kleiner married to Noveller performance shots, aligns Lipstate with peaceful, sandy landscapes, spots I hadn’t imagined because of her New York address, but that suddenly seem pretty obvious.
