When we handed Cassadaga a rough evaluation, we po’d Bright Eyes fans by poking fun at a few of Conor’s sillier lyrics like, “Corporate or colonial, the movement is unstoppable / like the body of the centerfold, it spreads” in “Clairaudients (Kill or Be Killed).” OK, we stand corrected. Turns out we just needed to hear them sighed by a dark-tinged female folk singer to get in the proper spirit: Marissa Nadler’s slow, twinkling, atmospheric cover of the Oberst tune popped up today, so we downloaded and pressed play. You can do the same after the jump.
Has anyone ever heard such a quiet “hooray”? We found the song at Marissa’s MySpace, but it’s part of Coke Machine Glow’s “Fantasy Cover Project,” wherein they asked some faves to cover other faves. Grab the podcast here. Over the years, Nadler’s done some interesting covers. Right, Neil Young? Another Coke Machine highlight is Outsiders fave Valet taking on Boris & Michio Kurihara’s “Rainbow.” You can also hear it at her MySpace.
