We’ve been following Scarlett Johansson’s music career because she covered Jeff Buckley, Tom Waits (with Dave Sitek), and because other reasons. Her latest endeavor is the Break Up LP, a set of Serge Gainsbourg/Brigitte Bardot-inspired duets with Pete Yorn, which so far has turned up the surprisingly effervescent and playful ditty “Relator.” It’s spelled terribly, maybe to help with its Google index, although then again projects involving ScarJo need little help in dominating internet search rankings. The track’s official clip has Pete and Scarlett loving each other and wanting to be left alone, being relatorably couple-y and unrelatorably attractive, bringing some visuals to the pair’s considerable chemistry. It may be unexpected that they sound so good together; that they look good together is probably a little less so.
Break Up is out 9/8 via Atco/Rhino.
