Decibel’s 40 Best Albums Of 2011

The early onslaught of year-end best-of lists continues! The great underground metal magazine Decibel has now joined the fray, publishing its list of the 40 best metal (and, I guess, metal-ish) albums of the year. The top spot goes to Path Of Totality, the new one from New York doom-scuzz trio Tombs. And there are a few big surprises here, like Opeth’s progged-out Heritage finishing at a mindboggling #2.

It’s fun to compare this one to former Stereogum Brandon Stosuy’s own metal list at Pitchfork. Brandon and Decibel both love Tombs, but Blut Aus Nord’s two 2011, collectively Brandon’s favorite of the year, are bizarrely absent from the Decibel list. One of my own favorite metal albums of the year, Rwake’s Rest, barely squeezes onto the Decibel list at #39; another, Black Tusk’s Set The Dial, is completely missing. It’d be easy to bitch about stuff like this, but it also goes to show that metal is in a pretty good place; there are enough great records that informed minds can totally disagree on what constitutes a top-40 album. Check out Decibel’s list below.
