Monthly Mix

Stereogum Monthly Mix: March 2012

This was an incredible month for free hip hop MP3s, and it was an incredible month for songs by Lemonade because “Neptune” is one of this year’s finest. And so the paramaters I gave myself with this month’s mix are as follows: Open with Lemonade’s “Neptune,” and create a track flow that blended but flipped genres, where most every alternate track was one of said indelible hip hop cuts. So we’ve got R&B, rap, baroque pop, rap, kraut rock, rap, and on. The mood arc goes from ebullience (tracks 1 through 4) to something darker and with more smoke (starting with El-P’s “The Full Retard”). There are come-ons (“Neptune,” Mr. Mutha Fuckin’ eXquire’s sex celebratory “Good Pussy In Chicago”), and there is one of the year’s best beats with Big Baby Gandhi’s “Blue Magic,” which features Das Racist, and also features the best Jay-Z, Nas, and Coldplay references of 2K12. Download this please, and don’t skip around:
