I love the drum pattern as well. But, ultimately, I think "50 Ways" is a bit too novelty for my taste. Even if I really like it, I had to cut it. It would have made the top 20, though. P.S. go read Tom's piece that he published recently about that song.
I lean early. It's true. I greatly appreciate his work throughout his career, but it's hard to carve out space for Songs for the Capeman——let alone all the Graceland tracks I love——without ruffling some feathers.
I appreciate this comment. I agree that the stuff he continues to do is superb. It just can't compete with what he did at his peak. But that's only when you compare Simon to Simon. If you play So Beautiful or So What against most other music that came out in 2016, it holds up better than most.
I had no idea this existed. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. "The Boy in the Bubble" would have likely been number 11. I do love Graceland despite the way the list shook out.
Listen, I'm with you on this one.
I go to bat for The Rhythm of the Saints in the article. Simon also believes this one to be underrated so he re-recorded it in 2018 for his album In the Blue Light.
I think "Boy in the Bubble" is better but "Diamonds" is canon. Watch the documentary Classic Albums: Graceland. Simon says something interesting about how the part with the horns was meant to have lyrics but he couldn't find the right words for it. He also comments that the aftershave line is outdated because nobody wears it anymore. P.S. I always adored the way he sang the line about the bodegas on Broadway.
I prefer "A Message to You Rudy," which I ranked at 47. When you watch all of them, the ones where it's just a band playing music get a bit boring.
It was Lani Hall and Herb Alpert, “Come What May." I can't give you a scientific reason beyond, "It sucked"
No way they didn't love Zappa
The issue is the video is not available in the U.S. It must have been a recent change because when I began doing research for the article, I was able to view it. But, when I was tightening up the rankings, I could no longer watch it.
what positions would you have changed?
Wonder if there's a list of them online. Only reason I was able to do this one was bc of a Wikipedia page that listen all the videos from day 1 and some very dedicated fan on YouTube who compiled a playlist of every single one: 209 in total, with some repeats.
Thank you for reading! Glad you enjoyed.
Hi Snoop, I think this song is a nice piece of power-pop that suffers from a lack of vision: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Opz_drg1O8 It's far from terrible, but it's just the band playing its guitars. Nothing that keeps your eyes from glazing over.
