There's a lot to say about Prince's discography but I think that one of my main takeaways is that Prince's sonic evolution takes place more in movements and eras rather from album to album. The dude recorded so many songs that it makes parsing out their spot in his career interesting. Songs on a record could have been written and recorded many many years in advance. It's interesting to hear a single song or album and think "wow I wonder where Prince goes to next" purely because the place you're currently listening at was probably already behind where Prince was at musically during the time of release. I always tried to listen and consider the music in the context of his work and the times and how his fans and the albums caught up to where his interests were *in the moment* Here's a favorite of mine from his first album with some crazy ripping solos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk5avOf5tqY

say what you will about technology and how it could change things, but the idea that people will stop going to concerts is hilariously dumb to me. also, any art that is created by AI is not art. art does not exist without humanity. yes technology provides tool to create it. no technology can never be the artist. thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I read Tricky's new autobiography over the weekend and he had a funny U2 story about how they wanted him to produce Pop. "Bono played me the demos, and it was a really awkward situation. 'Look,' I said, 'you've got a great drummer there, and a great bass player, and some really great songs. I think this stuff is as good as The Joshua Tree, and it doesn't need anything to it.' 'No,' Bono grinned from behind his shades, 'but we really want some more modern beats on it.' 'Mate, what can I do? All you've gotta do is mix it. You want me to put all this shit over it, and you're going to ruin it.' And that's exactly what happened - they ruined it. " "They should have put out the demos they played me, but the version of Pop they released was unrecognisable from that. I was shocked by what I heard."

I live next to an elementary school in Hollywood that has an auditorium called the "Michael Jackson Auditorium." it blows my mind that it's still called that. There were a couple camera crews out there in the weeks after the HBO doc dropped, but I'm just still surprised they haven't changed it yet. https://express-images.franklymedia.com/6616/sites/320/2019/03/07134659/53599750_2349147121971608_3316998397977690112_n.jpg

November 10, 2019 on Neil Young Says His Application For US Citizenship Has Been Delayed Due To His Marijuana Use
I brought this same issue up in the Drake/marijuana thread. If you admit to any pot use, or even work in the cannabis industry, you’re gonna have a hard time acquiring a visa/green card/citizenship. Doesn’t matter if it’s legal in your home country or the state you reside in. It’s a terrible policy.....

haven't commented on SUD in a while (because I no longer am at work on Fridays and therefore away from the computer). so hey y'all happy fka twigs day ! this weekend marks 2 years since I stopped drinking alcohol and I feel alive! grateful! thankful! big respect to everyone out there doing what u need to do to get by. the air quality in LA was absolute shit yesterday, but I made some tasty butternut squash soup so fall has officially started. looking to explore some fun seasonal dishes so if anyone has any recommendations I'd luv to hear them.

Sing About Me / Dying of Thirst at the moment is my favorite song he's done this last decade. I think picking Kendrick's best song of the 2010s is harder than picking the most intriguing artist of that time period (def him), but if I were to pick one that touches up on all the things I love about him, it'd be that one. At least right now, I imagine that will change as it has so many times throughout the past ten years,

Correct me if I'm wrong but can't the U.S. government keep Drake out of the country for even engaging in the Canadian weed industry? Even if it's legal in Canada, and in certain U.S. states I'm pretty sure that Drake could be turned away next time he enters the U.S. The U.S. government issued something official on this earlier in the year that allows the government to turn people and deny citizenship/green cards/visas to those who have been known to even consume weed. So working in cannabis would actually be the same. I know Drake is super wealthy and has the means to work around this problem should it come up, but it's interesting. source: https://thinkprogress.org/officials-encouraged-to-deny-citizenship-to-immigrants-for-smoking-legal-marijuana-0d3ced2f76b4/ and I work at an immigration law firm but am not an attorney / authority on this at all.

November 6, 2019 on Drake Launching Cannabis Business
I was at this show and it was absolutely wild. The weather was incredibly hot, people were passing out left and right. Everyone killed it except for Nas who didn't make it to the show (if I'm remembering correctly). Then Rage started and people on the outer parts of the crowd started lighting shit on fire. People stripping their clothes off and throwing them into the fire. Running and jumping through it while helicopters were flying overhead. I will never forget it

the warmth of that last one is hypnotizing. really blown away by the production on this project. he's creating really interesting moments in a short span and instead of lingering on those parts, he quickly goes to the next idea. and none of it feels rushed. but i'm equally blown away by how the production serves his performance. there's something really special happening here. SRS and this new project feel longer than they are because there's so much to unpack

Easily sounds better than ye, in tone, style, and substance. I thought the back half was very interesting. Production is minimal in line with 808s. I think it's pretty easy to be cynical abt this release but there are some gorgeous moments on here that I think are going to age well and a conciseness that justifies itself Curious how my opinion is going to change tho because I liked ye on first listen and quickly realized how bad it was. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm thankful 'New Body' is not on this album

Got my vinyl yesterday and listened to it exactly once while cutting lemons and limes. 10/10 experience and I'm struggling to think of another record I've loved as much as this one purely on first listen. Great writeup here Ryan, can't wait to dig into this record even more.

I think you really hit the nail on the re: lightening up the horror. And I totally agree with cokeparty below about being happy with this Danny. I'm listening to "Die like a Rockstar" and it makes me think of all of this. So much of what makes XXX a great release is how shocking it is while still being clever and hilarious. But the shock is definitely there. Makes me happy seeing a guy take the needed steps to be healthy while finding new ways to make compelling work throughout. I like to think of XXX as being American grime at certain points because of how Danny these situations

The Danny record is growing on me. There's definitely a change in his approach and delivery, it's so noticeable when listening to XXX and new one in the same sitting. With that said, I think this new one is easily his most colorful album (I think the cover perfectly matches the sound), and the back half of it keeps delivering. "Savage Nomad" has an old edge to it, the title track is a breezy one we haven't heard him do before, hearing him and JPEGMAFIA over a FlyLo beat just hits on many levels, and the Blood Orange feature was a nice surprise. I think this record will age well.
