The one I've heard is that James found a jacket left behind at a party (or something) and the initials MMJ were written on the inside of the jacket. Someone made the joke that the initials stood for My Morning Jacket. Who knows, though.

Yeah, I know people like their music. I don't actually know Maus' stuff, but I think Ariel Pink is one of the most overrated musicians of all time. He's got a few good songs, but I just don't see it.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
