This premie evie misses the mark in almost every conceivable fashion. The comparison to Rivers Cuomo is irrelevant except for the fact that he is another frontman of a band who postponed his musical career to pursue his education and that's where the comparison ends. Tom then goes on to double-down on petty comparisons to fellow musicians as a way of diminishing Pecknold's artistic integrity with the half-baked analysis that "Josh Tillman has reinvented himself, built a whole new sound, refashioned a persona, and put together a whole dazzling three-album arc in the time that Pecknold’s been messing around with woodworking and term papers." Because we all know that pursuing one's education at one of the nations most prestigious academic institution should be frowned upon as an ignoble endeavor. At least he had the good sense to follow up this sophomoric analysis with the line, "I’m sure Pecknold and Tillman don’t see themselves as being in competition with one another, just as Pecknold isn’t trying to write his own Pinkerton, but the comparison is unavoidable." Except, they are avoidable. This should not be a mutually exclusive argument--both are brilliant artists who have created superb albums this year and they are probably better off with their own individual creative projects. We should feel lucky to have the privilege of bearing witness to their unique talents, not pin them against one another because it gets clicks. I'm glad that Pecknold dropped in to bring some thoughtfulness and perspective to Tom's haphazard write-up and that Tom had the self-awareness to admit that he is more or less "an asshole with a keyboard" because.. puzzles man.

Mind boggling how many people can't see the similarity between these songs. Sounds like both parties handled this well. Love Miguel, but 1979 is a much better song.

Balls!!! I didn't ever realize War on Drugs dropped a new album this week! I will never be able to thank you enough, honlads. Also, I like Schoolboy Q as much as the next mid-20's white guy, but giving his album AOTW over St. Vincent, Wild Beasts (and probably War on Drugs) is just silly.

You know how I know I'm getting old? When I saw this article I immediately thought to myself "what is wrong with the world that a clown like this continues to get notoriety." It's a real shame that music sources that I enjoy, like Stereogum, continue to perpetuate this guys fame and fortune. The fact that they quote an instagram message where he casually talks about his friends killing cops is pathetic. But I guess it gets them their precious page views.
