I went to see Frank Ocean last night in Atlanta. The venue DJ played at least eight different 2 Chainz verses in about an hour, no exaggeration. 2 Chainz has inexplicably taken over hip-hop this summer and while I think he is sort of terrible, I can't help but get excited whenever I hear him yell "2 CHAAAAAINZ" on a track. He is charming, in his own way.
If you think Frank has any sort of similarity to most current "cool kid" R&B then I honestly don't think you listen to much R&B in general or at least you haven't listened to this album yet. Lyrically at least, Frank Ocean is miles away from anything else in the genre right now.
I actually liked when they had super mainstream pop on the show.
My personal favorites:
- Marnie crying to Demi Lovato's Skyscraper. That was a strangely emotional/real moment attached to such a cheesy and over the top song, it worked for that very reason.
- The benefit for the missing girl including "Pretty Girl Rock" by Keri Hilson. That scene was hilarious to me if only because of the implication that the whole reason they chose to dance to that song was because Keri Hilson and Carrie (the missing girl) shared the same first name.
The House that Heaven Built - Japandroids
Motion Sickness - Hot Chip
Pyramids- Frank Ocean
Straight Up - Future (not really indie but this song is so dope and he is signed to the same major label as Death Grips and you included them sooo)
Also I suggest some sort of comical stamp effect be placed over that picture of Jack White. Maybe it should say "BEEF BUSTED!" or something similar? Come on guys, I know you can do it.
Swizz Beatz seems like such a nice guy and he is a good to great producer. He is such an awful rapper though, I feel bad for him. His biggest accomplishment is that sort of fun but incredibly dumb "Top Down" song that made it into Grand Theft Auto IV.
This song is good but A$AP and Araab-Muzik's beat make Swizz sound like an incompetent joke.
Dirty untagged stream over at Big Sean's website http://uknowbigsean.com/
Also notable that Young Chop, producer of the original track, is apparently pissed off about this remix for some reason.
Leave it to Madonna to enroll two female-pop megastars to be in her video only to turn them into her literal cheerleaders while she sings about how great and important she is. This is just further pushing of the "MADONNA IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A POP GODDESS" false-history onto consumers that mostly consider her irrelevant. Yuck.
As a huge Campesinos fan I was pretty disappointed by this album. Though it's worth noting (if I remember correctly) that Romance is Boring didn't make the 2010 Stereogum list so I didn't expect to see them pop up here.
