Shit man, you were making good points until your last paragraph. I was born in '86 and didn't come out until I was 24-25. Does that make me a coward and a sociopath, or just a scared and confused kid from suburbia who never had anyone he could talk to about these things? It's cool that you and all your friends were confident enough to come out early on, but have some respect for those of us who weren't. It's not the same for everyone, and saying coming out later in life is "honestly kind of sad" is super fucking harmful, if you ask me.

Just trying out all of the jokes they can think of to see if any of them stick, it seems. Gotta say though, so far none of them are.

A genuine thank you to everyone in this comment section who is taking the time to thoughtfully explain the nuances of this situation. You didn't have to go that hard into the political analysis, but I appreciate that you did because I'm pretty clueless here.

Hey guys just a quick comment on how I'm doing. I still haven't heard this song and I'm sorry for the dumb things I said before while talking about it. Also what's a Bebe Rexha?

May 17, 2018 on Bebe Rexha Responds To “Girls” Backlash: “I Felt Disrespected”
I'm sorry, I wasn't clear in what I meant by "real" and I think I need to clarify. I didn't mean to imply that certain girls who kiss girls don't count, I was trying to refer to actual literal girls who kiss girls in real life who have to deal with issues that hypothetical girls in fun pop songs don't usually deal with. However, I was also operating under the false assumption that this song was about hypothetical girls and that the people involved in making it were all straight and were trying to exploit something they didn't really fully understand. I should have been more informed of the context before commenting. Or like...at the very least, listened to the song. Sorry.

Right on. I actually agree with you on every point (especially the part about bi erasure within the community). I've not heard the song so I don't personally have much of an opinion on the matter yet, I was just responding because I misunderstood the phrasing of your initial post and thought you were conflating two separate issues. Respect.

There's nothing wrong with writing songs about kissing girls, but the problem with this one in particular (at least as Hayley Kiyoko describes it) is that it isn't so much about kissing girls because you're into it as much as it is about kissing girls because everyone else is and you're JUST SO WILD AND CRAZY and doesn't really deal with the social baggage that real girls who kiss girls have to. I'm sure this all sound inconsequential, but when you're LGBT and always searching for positive representation, it's a total bummer when something like this misses the mark. And I'm not implying that all songs written about same sex romance need to tackle these big issues, but I think--at the very least--the ones written by straight folks need to be aware of them.

Not gonna lie, it's kind of annoying the heck out of me that people are so turned off by this because it's "self-serving." Like yeah, obviously it is, but I'm sure the people he's helping out don't give a shit. I'd take a millionaire who gives money away and makes a show of it over one that doesn't give it away at all. And not only that, but flaunting riches in music isn't new. Isn't it better to flaunt said riches by giving them away rather than by spending them on something huge?

I hate to be cynical, but does anyone actually care? I haven't fucked with this group since that shit they spewed about ILoveMakonnen, and it's made me real uncomfortable how popular they've gotten despite their clear homophobic views. This story is going to be in the cycle for another day or so, then Culture 2 is going to get Best New Music from Pitchfork and everybody's going to act shocked in a couple months when they pull this exact sort of thing again.
