It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s still us against them, and we’re (?!?!?!?!) winning!
“Is Love Forever?” rips. The tour they did for this album when Deerhunter opened ripped. The performance they did on goddamn Jimmy Fallon of “Nobody Gets Me But You” with Questlove ripped. I was still in the ‘Spoon could do no wrong’ camp after this album came out.
Online rumors point to a new album and spring US tour announcement on Monday. Hoping so!
Listening party for the Kankyō Ongaku box set?
Their show Sunday at 9:30 Club ripped.
Surprised to see Sleep Well Beast as The National representative here. I feel like Trouble Will Find Me is the choice.
The “Sleep Now In The Fire” video is wild to watch now. You’ve got Rudy Giuliani’s about five seconds in, a “Donald Trump for President” sign, plus all the fake game show questions about Americans without healthcare and underpayment of women in the workforce. 20 years later and all this shit is still here.
I saw them do Lake Somerset around when Monomania came out. That ruled.
(that said, the CEG show I saw on lenses alien tour was one of the worst shows I’ve seen, really a mess)
LOSE is a stone-cold classic and one of the best albums of the 2010s. FUCK YOUR LEARNER'S PERMIT
Does I Am Easy To Find count as a double album?
Shout our to Lana for pushing the start time back from 7:30 to 9:00 to accommodate for folks stuck in an absurd traffic jam. This included me, who had my morning flight from DCA to LAX cancelled due to mechanics issues and didn’t end up getting to LAX at 6:00pm. What should have been a relatively short travel day turned into a 15 hour odyssey for us, but somehow we got into the Hollywood Bowl with a few minutes to spare. The fireworks during Venice Bitch were vindicating.
Glad I could contribute to the discourse!
Thanks for this wholesome content, Stereogum!
My Woman is on my best-of-decade shortlist. Can't wait to hear this.
Got Nuffin, really?
The Washington Post consistently has great music and culture writing. They’re worth supporting.
Ok the “checkered past” joke really got me.
I've seen them about a dozen times and had 2 notably bad shows where Matt was out of it. The other shows ranged from good to excellent.
Ryan Leas doing WORK this week.
Same here. Great write-up Ryan! Can't wait to listen to this come Friday.
Naw, 4 by Beyoncé and Parallax were both 2011. That’s what he’s talking about. But since you mentioned Logos... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C79Q7MV4Fgo
Pitchfork 09 ruled. You & Me era The Walkmen, Furr era Blitzen Trapper, Boxer era The National, Midnight Organ Fight era Frightened Rabbit, Veckatimest era Grizzly Bear, Saturdays=Youth era M83, Hospice era Antlers. That was a good weekend.
I think there's a difference between repeating yourself and reinventing yourself. The National don't reinvent themselves every album, but don't think they're repeating themselves either. The singles so far are very much National songs, but they're a far cry from the more raucous tracks on SWB. They're also more positive (dare I say more "hopeful") than most of their past discography (save for "Light Years," which I agree doesn't really stand out in the realm of sad National piano ballads).
Stereogum calls em like they see em, I don’t think there’s a greater narrative agenda here.
"Day I Die" has some DRUMS.
Me, realizing the National will release their 7th straight great album.

I didn’t mean it a total drag. Evil Urges was a divisive detour for a band that was on an undeniable hot streak. It caused a lot of fans to check out, but still has its ardent supporters that claim it’s a misunderstood gem. Plus intentionally difficult album art. The main difference is MMJ could transform some of those songs into total live powerhouses. I don’t think Vampire Weekend is that kinda band.
I'm surprised Counting Crows are not big font. Should I be?

Here for some rippin' riffs.
Posted below but enjoy! Monday’s show was so gooood.
I encourage everyone to see Cass McCombs this tour. Back in 2011 I saw a set where he basically had his back to the crowd the entire time. Fast forward to Monday and he played 2+ hour jammy, fun as hell rock show. Best set I’ve seen in a bit. “Big Wheel” live is so crunchy aaaaahhhhh I loved it.
