9-7-5 Also, if you're wondering when I am continuing the Number 3s, I have to like combine polls into sections for Wednesday (after I get my AP classes done)
Hello, due to having to go back to school, I’ll be gone for the next two Stereogum columns. So for today, I am posting 3 Links, One for Monday (Which is Today), One for Wednesday and one for Friday. THE NUMBER 3s!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you to the 73 of you TNOCS veterans and visitors for doing this poll. The Scores ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Spinners- I’ll Be Around (1972) [Highest Ratings] Average- 8.5 (AC: 8.47) Mode: 9 (x23) [31.9%] Highest Rating- 10 (x16) Lowest Rating- 4 (x1) CRS (Out of 185)- 11 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bobby Vee- The NIght Has A Thousand Eyes (1963) [Lowest Ratings] Average- 5.6 (AC: 5.62) Mode: 5 (x12) [18.2%] [There was also 12 votes for the mode of 7, 5 is closer to average] Highest Rating- 10 (x1) Lowest Rating- 2 (x2) CRS (Out of 185)- 141 Fun Fact: The song “Come Back When You Grow Up”, which Bobby Vee was accompanied by The Strangers, got an average rating of 4.69 and is 30 spots below The Night Has A Thousand Eyes. Another Fun Fact: Yes, I laughed at the ridiculous video for this song, especially the girl on the motorcycle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Pointer Sisters- He’s So Shy (1980) Average- 7.5 (AC: 7.52) Mode: 8 (x25) [34.2%] Highest Rating- 10 (x2) Lowest Rating- 3 (x1) CRS (Out of 185)- 50 Fun Fact: “Jump (For My Love)” has an average rating of 7.98 and is 20 spots above “He’s So Shy” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lynn Anderson- (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden (1970 (Peak: 1971)) Average- 7.0 (AC: 7.03) Mode: 7 (x18) [25%] Highest Rating- 10 (x10) Lowest Rating- 2 (x2) CRS (Out of 185)- 76 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Today’s https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScQO514CmhA7JQ4GKK2kVSyn67pqxPv_turg_wAEmoJrZDFAQ/viewform?usp=sf_link Wednesday’s: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfJFKajXCwpbBm5E781H6Gdn34Z3TB2tDL_h2eJJ_-VpvLIoA/viewform?usp=sf_link Friday’s: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScu_iPe2SkMFntzNtpTnJA3Dpv1L95kvaTOkHaQiY8Erbn8mA/viewform?usp=sf_link ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OA- 6. It's a high six as I can see a good song in play, it's just that in terms of Paula Abdul songs that hit #1, this isn't my favorite. (TLTB) Close To You- Ah I feel a bit mad at myself for the low score I am giving this song, but tbh this is probably their worst song IMO (Sing is a 3 IMO, I at least get what it is going for) this is just a failed Disney princess' audition song that is too boring to be making fun of the cliche. A 2 at minimum, 3 at most. MTM (NTC)- 8. Ah yes, I like this. Three Dog Night's first #1 hit and it's their best #1 hit. The energy, the high registered vocals at the chorus.
The Number 3s!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you to the 91 of you TNOCS veterans and visitors for doing this poll. The Scores ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rod Stewart- Downtown Train (1989 (Peak: 1990)) Average- 6.8 (AC: 6.79) Mode: 7 (x25) [27.5%] Highest Rating- 10 (x6) Lowest Rating- 2 (x3) CRS (Out of 181)- 85 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Carpenters- For All We Know (1971) Average- 6.8 (AC: 6.78) Mode: 7 (x18) [20.5%] Highest Rating- 10 (x7) Lowest Rating- 1 (x2) CRS (Out of 181)- 87 Fun Fact: “Sing (A Song)” by Carpenters is currently at position 119 (And had an average of 5.97 for accurate average) so “For All We Know” is 32 positions above “Sing (A Song)” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Petula Clark- This Is My Song (1967) [Lowest Ratings] Average- 5.6 (AC: 5.64) Mode: 5 (x17) [20.2%] Highest Rating- 10 (x1) Lowest Rating- 2 (x3) CRS (Out of 181)- 137 Fun Fact: So I have also been looking at the scores the Freaky Trigger Website was giving (I don’t agree with all of them, they literally gave a higher score to “I’ve Never Been To Me” by Charlene instead of “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” by Manfred Mann) but for this song, they gave it a 1. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Commodores- Nightshift (1984) [Highest Ratings] Average- 7.5 (AC: 7.51) Mode: 8 (x24) [26.4%] Highest Rating- 10 (x13) Lowest Rating- 2 (x1) CRS (Out of 181)- 49 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here is Friday’s Poll: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeynxz-gyXDfBypekcZXnDtRmFP5ivrOzUi7_8QfA3-e5anWA/viewform?usp=sf_link Originally I was gonna give you guys 2 links considering I have school on Wednesday and Friday, but all three days next week have a song that peaked at #3 in 1990, so that’s a no go :b. But I do have a little forward thinking thing (This is not a score, this is just something to look forward to in the future) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSchXu-n0yyAW5rCqbEg_4pCW9AQkvg_m21jEVJ_EVqSiZ5r0Q/viewform?usp=sf_link ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Errors in Scores Overkill- Men At Work (Part 8)- 7.7
2-10-4 HAISTLWY- I believe there is a layer y'all don't know about this song. This song isn't a Sad Break-Up type of song. It is a song about a man (Or if we're talking about the Lauren version a woman£ begging down to the person they had been in love with for about....5 years maybe and crying at their feet. If I was the woman, I would be so uncomfortable in this situation. War- TBH this is in the lower half of the 10s I've given. That being said, MAN does this song deliver. I am all in w/protest songs that go against war propaganda). MIWY- If is probably the worst song that became a hit IMO, but like I'm not the most interested in this song either. I do kinda like the lustful guitars. The problem for me is that it isn't exactly interesting.
Funny thing is there is a song that Kenny G and Michael Bolten Collaborated on in 1992
Wanted to post this for you to fix: So there is an error in the scores as in my records, “California Girls” by The Beach Boys got an 8.2 (AC: 8.23)
THE NUMBER 3s!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you to the 53 of you TNOCS veterans and visitors for doing this poll. I was gonna extend the dates for this, but it won’t affect it by much The Scores ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Barbara Lewis- Hello Stranger (1963) [Lowest Ratings] Average- 6.8 (AC: 6.79) Mode: 7 (x18) [34.6%] Highest Rating- 10 (x5) Lowest Rating- 3 (x2) CRS (Out of 177)- 84 If you were expecting to hear the rating to “I Know (You Don’t Love Me No More)”, you’ll be mistaken as that song is by Barbara GEORGE, not Lewis ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Beatles- Please Please Me (1964) [Highest Ratings] Average- 7.8 (AC: 7.75) Mode: 7 (x12) [23.1%] Highest Rating- 10 (x11) Lowest Rating- 4 (x2) CRS (Out of 177)- 35 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brick- Dazz (1976 (Peak: 1977)) Average- 7.5 (AC: 7.48) Mode: 9 (x13) [25%] Highest Rating- 10 (x4) Lowest Rating- 4 (x1) CRS (Out of 177)- 51 [Fun Fact about the current spots: the two songs above are “Dirty Laundry” by Don Healey and “Desire” by U2. Yes I find it hilarious 3 songs that start with the letter D are a 3 pack, the triple D lol.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gladys Knights and The Pips- Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me (1974) Average- 7.2 (AC: 7.23) Mode: 7 (x11) [20.8%] Highest Rating- 10 (x4) Lowest Rating- 3 (x2) CRS (Out of 177)- 59 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wednesday’s Poll is up (This time if I don’t get 60 responses I’ll repost it for Friday): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeTtECfWNC4e6lHv1yYxJYDnpdqxPAMfR7pBKlhpF2gv_p_zw/viewform?usp=sf_link
My Least favorite/worst #1 hits of the 1980s: 1. "We Are The World" by USA For Africa 2. "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago 3. "Abracadabra" by Steve Miller Band 4. "Glory of Love" by Peter Cetera 5. "Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley" by Will To Power 6. "If You Don't Know Me By Now" by Simply Red (Frick forgot to add "Do That To Me One More Time" here, just take my word that is #7) 7. "The Next Time I Fall" by Peter Cetera & Amy Grant 8. "Rock On" by Michael Damian 9. "A Groovy Kind of Love" by Phil Collins 10. "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin DHMs: (11) "Shake You Down" by Gregory Abbott (12) "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" by Milli Vanilli (13) "Arthur's Theme (The Best That You Can Do)" by Christopher Cross (14) "Woman In Love" by Barbra Streisand (Yep, I don't regret disliking this song) (15) "Red Red Wine" by UB40
Another Day in Paradise-8. I get that it isn't for everyone and listening to a song about a homeless person and their misery while Phil Collins narrates this in the person who is in misery. But god damn I LOVE this instrumentation. Shame that it had to be used w/these lyrics. If it was about a different topic I would've rate it a 9 or even a 10. Cracklin' Rosie- 8 or 9. It's Neil Diamond alright. Glad this is the late 60s/early 70s version of Neil Diamond. Ain't No Mountain High Enough- 7. I don't really have much of a connection w/the original, nor the cover. Doesn't mean this song is bad by any means necessary. I like Diana Ross' other #1 hits.
The Number 3s ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you to the 79 of you TNOCS veterans and visitors for doing this poll, here are the results The Scores ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tommy Jone And The Shondells- Mony Mony (1968) [Highest Ratings] Average- 7.3 (AC: 7.27) Mode: 8 (x25) [32.1%] Highest Rating- 10 (x4) Lowest Rating- 2 (x2) CRS (Out of 173)- 56 Fun Fact: If we look at the rating for the Billy Idol (Live) Cover, the original has 1.3 points above the TNOCS community ratings (In which they gave it a 6.0) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Daryll Hall & John Oates- Everything Your Heart Desires (1988) [Lowest Ratings] Average- 5.4 (AC: 5.43) Mode: 6 (x20) [26.3%] Highest Rating- 9 (x4) Lowest Rating- 2 (x1) CRS (Out of 173)- 135 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Billy Joel- My Life (1978 (Peak: 1979)) Average- 6.9 (AC: 6.88) Mode: 7 (x20) [26%] Highest Rating- 10 (x4) Lowest Rating- 1 (x2) CRS (Out of 173)- 74 [“Just The Way You Are”, the other song that we have gone over, is just 3 spots above it] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sting- If You Love Somebody Set Them Free (1985) Average- 6.7 (AC: 6.68) Mode: 7 (x19) [24.7%] [there was also 19 votes for the score of 8, 7 is closer to average] Highest Rating- 10 (x1) Lowest Rating- 2 (x1) CRS (Out of 173)- 85 [Ironic considering it came out in 1985] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Today's Link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeTaaAb3McqlKq8DFXPQzvx_MtGLQ5HUF71nNL2_dF6-hQ8gA/viewform?usp=sf_link
Oh frick, The Marvin Gaye song- "Sexual Healing" got a score of 8.6 (AC: 8.63)
7 is about right for this song. In terms of Western/Cowboy type #1's, I'll go for El Paso, but this is good for what it is. Did they use this song in the animated movie in 2011 of the same name? idk, I haven't watched that film since 2014.
2-7-10 WDSTF- Aight so if I have one positive thing to say that I kinda disagree with the rest of you people is that I don't exactly hear the smugness of Billy Joel on this song. (I mean maybe it's because what I imagine smugness from Billy Joel, I think of "It's Still Rock N Roll")That being said however, this is by far one of his biggest LOWS in his career. It isn't ANNOYINGLY catchy like that Brian Hyland song that hit #1, but it's up there ITILY- Good, nothing more IBT- I love it, don't really have comments on it, Tom made that review perfect.
*I meant it to say Highest Rated song that peaked at #3 in 1989

We got 4 Polls’ results. Next Week, Luckly, I’ll be able to do the polls at the correct date the columns come out. It will probably last till labor day. I have no idea how I could access my chromebook during Jazz Band/Wind Ensemble, but if my band teacher allows us to use the chromebook until 9:00, then I can see a settlement going here. Also, this marks our first complete year of scores and I’ll show those results underneath THESE results.
