Differences: Kanye and Kozalek have been atrocious people. Kanye siding with a racist president and denying slavery, Kozalek has been actively rude and unpleasant to other performers and his own fans... From what I can tell Grimes has done nothing as disrespectful as awful as these two. Nor has Lana. They both seem fairly respectful people all in all. So it's interesting that you would lump them with Kanye and Koz, two actually reprehensible people. Also, I never said you yourself were sexist, however when I see multiple comments above from different people referring to these two as "dumb", well it just seems like there's a different standard being used for the girls than for the guys.

December 3, 2019 on Lana Del Rey Talks To Grimes For Interview
The level of snark directed towards Lana and Grimes astounds me, and if I didn't know that y'all are inclusive and tolerant folks here, I'd guess it carries a strong whiff of casual sexism.

It's definitely got a Garbage vibe, which it seems to acknowledge with the Stupid Girl line, and also I'm pretty sure she mentions Bullet With Butterfly Wings in there as well?

Wouldn't it be amazing if his head WAS actually really cut off though, and his Humpty Dumpty body was just left standing there, blood streaming down his roguishly dishevelled suit jacket, and his head was rolling about on the floor with his tiny brain starting to ooze out on the Downing St carpet, eyes popping out of his flabby nationalist face, his lips frozen in a jolly but ultimately sinister quip he was halfway through, and will never complete. Wouldn't that be excellent.

And I love Neil Young. But I loved him a lot more when he was less political.

Only slightly more elegant than "Land Of The Free", The Killers' similar attempt at an anti anti immigration protest song

Although I don't really think Lana was trying to weaponize her fanbase, I think she was just genuinely upset at Ann's assumptions about who she was and what she stood for. But a critic should be able to assume these kinds of things and express them to the public without being criticized for it.

No, it was not covered, and it seemed like a perfect opportunity missed.

Yeah, whilst I felt Lana had a point, I was kinda disappointed that she decided to engage in that way. It seemed kind of petty. Let's say I was torn.

How do we feel about Lana biting back at Ann Powers on Twitter this week over her mostly positive review of Norman Fucking Rockwell? I would link to the tweet, but I'm terrible at posting anything other than text on here. Just check her most recent replies and mentions. She was livid. I thought she had a point, there was something vaguely condescending about the tone of the review.

The general vibe of the thing is about as inane as that. There were videos of him recording slavish versions of Dylan songs posted by someone the other day. Did he learn nothing about the basics of writing good lyrics from these songs?

The new mono genre is dully absorbing all colour from the music world. Notwithstanding, this is very pretty, sort of in the way that an Instagram filter can be pretty.

Just because you admit your song is facile doesn't give you licence to release it.

Is this the place to mention the other site's wildly enthusiastic and faintly hyperbolic review (which I agreed with mostly, although it seemed to miss the sly humor of the album)? Because I am almost Tom Breihan levels of excited about this album, and it was nice to see that other people are in that space as well. It's the perfect way to finish off the decade, and it will also be decade defining.

I give her full props for trying to fight the power, but I honestly don't think she knows what she is talking about. "Oh yeah" and "yeah absolutely" do not sound like there is much thought gone into this plan yet.

There were some morbid lyrics in the new songs, sure, and some lyrics that hinted at a deep well of despair, but I sorta hoped that by writing them down and releasing them it was some sort of positive processing mechanism, that perhaps everything wasn't as bad as it seemed if he was talking about it. It seems like everything was as bad as it seemed, which is truly, truly sad. All my favourite singers couldn't sing. RIP

Part Time is a hard listen for me. I first discovered them last year, my new girlfriend made me a playlist and their song "Night Drive" was the first track on it. Over time it became a part of our relationship, like a symbol of things between us, and it soundtracked our New Year's Eve kiss last year, under fireworks. Of course, you all know that the next part of this story is that we are no longer together, but this song, Night Drive, and even the words "Part Time", bring the whole thing flooding back. Good times, but also a flood of melancholy. Music, hey?
