People rly gotta find something to complain about every time. I know these songs like the back of my damn hand and I can FULLY assure that the artists Gaga is curating to cover her songs are doing it in their own way, adding their own energy to them, and giving those of us whose lives were changed by the album something entirely new to celebrate. Seriously: Big Freedia; Orville Peck; Kylie Minogue—Gaga knows what she’s doing with this. Friendly reminder that these songs do exist in their original interpretation, and have been around for yall to stan for 10 years. I probably sound like I’m malding, but, much love. This album is about self-acceptance AND acceptance of all. If you don’t like the tracks, well…nothing much I can do about that! 😂💜
This is what I get for ignoring the Gum for two days: missing out on this
Holy shit, another person who acknowledges “Good In Bed”—thank you for existing. People were saying that was the most unremarkable track on the album and it was astounding to me. Shit slaps.
I feel like I remember when this happened (was a pure lurker for about three years) but at the same time 2016-2020 is a black hole/void in my memory being an American citizen so thank you for the clearest refresher possible eastside. It’s a true accomplishment to Kunkel around here (also, that account was DEFINITELY Ethan, we all know actual musicians lurk around here. Someone stick-and-poke “Stereogum the only comments section we acknowledge” onto me)
Fair enough— getting past the chord progression (and key for that matter) being the same, I was shocked by the similarity in the sound of the synths/drums. That’s…a fair few things to outweigh the single variable of his vocal delivery. My first reaction to this post was just that it’s sad to see any of this happen post-mortem, his mother does NOT deserve the emotional stress of this, point blank. But, that’s what fair-use lawyers are for, shoutout to Juice Drinksteen’s comment and career!
Is his character even questionable at this point?
On WhoSampled it literally says that Juice WRLD’s song samples Ghost Loft’s song so, I mean, I guess in some way you could call it the “same sample” 😉
Shocker, I hate to ask & you’re free to not answer, but I’m EXTREMELY curious: where do you hail from; did you go to an arts school? I’m not sure if receiving placeholder diplomas is an anomaly or not, but it sure as hell felt like one around here, and BEYOND interested to check on that 0.0000000001% chance that we went to the same HS. BIG congratulations on graduating my dude! 👌🙌💯
My mother used to tell me stories of the Harvey Milk era and the AIDS epidemic, and there was this certain sense of awe and disbelief—the sense that things really could’ve been like that was mindblowing. (And I know plenty of you *lived* through that.) Things like this make me feel like telling my future children about my lived experiences as a young queer person—all lived experiences of queer folks in the early 21st century—will be mindblowing to them. THAT’S mindblowing to ME. We still fight for intersectional rights every day, and hell if it hasn’t been absolutely fucking marred over the last five years, but it still feels like we’ve come so incredibly far. All my queer/trans folks in the commentariat—I love you all so fucking much. Gaga’s keys are our keys. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ (p.s.—lord, it’s 2021, we need an intersectional pride flag)
charli has actively been doing THAT (minus sprawling ballads like speechless, i’ll grant that) for five years
thank you for sharing this story. it’s beautiful; it’s so exemplary of what gaga’s relationship is with her fans and how deeply she cares for every single one of them. i’m so happy for you and for every person in that room with you.
SPEAKING THE GOSPEL
STOP ITTT😭💜
dan/cody i just wanna be part of the cool gay kid club 🥺
Absolutely stellar write-up, James. Thank you. It’s unfathomable to me that this album is celebrating its 10th birthday; I remember the night she announced the album as though it were yesterday. Honestly, little gay-boy me was sobbing his eyes out! Mother Monster is and always has been way too fucking gauche for me but…she really, truly is like a mother to so many of us, myself included. I had the privilege of seeing Gaga live with my own mother just a few weeks before the album came out, by the time she was performing Yoü and I as part of the setlist—forgive me getting overly personal, but, it’s just recently been five years since my mother passed, and I can confidently say that seeing Gaga with her was the best night of my life. Charli is unequivocally carrying Gaga’s torch. She has plenty of contemporaries that are following in her realm (you hit on two of the biggest with Dua and Rina)—but c’mon, she put out Nuclear Seasons in 2012. Nobody can tell me she wasn’t already on that path at that point, even if she had to make a whole label-forced bore of an album before coming into her own. (And of course, that was largely through meeting SOPHIE, whom I always considered one of the biggest carrier’s of Gaga’s torch. Rest in peace, you absolute fucking angel. I can only pray that we get to hear any work that you and Gaga did together.) That album art do be trash. There’s a reason she put out a deluxe version with just her face that includes tracks that are simply essential to the album. Jesus is the new black!
did u sign up just to make this comment lmaoooo
ok this is unironically correct and I wish bloodpop would work w her more but he’s too busy living on chromatica, which I’m more than okay with
their entire life as partners is an exercise in unintentional sketch comedy, I feel like doing it deliberately is a little like “wait wha?” to them
