Take out 21 Pilots (at least since their new album) and Hozier and I’ll agree wholeheartedly. The rest are utter drek. Chain smokers and Nickelback each have like 3 decent-to-good songs with the rest of their discographies being trash, but I don’t even know who Judah and the Lion is but based on that name I’m just feeling the vibe that they are very bad, AJR is trash, and The strumbellas are trash. ❤️ Bless

February 12, 2019 on Nicki Minaj Drops Off BET Concert After Network’s Cardi B Social Media Post
Ya like fuck her (Warren) for doing that and for not just coming out and saying that she claimed native ancestry just to get ahead. Like I’m white and from the south and my family also has the racist and race-sciencey “your great granny was a full blooded Cherokee, you can see it in our cheekbones bc they sit so high up on our face” story too, just like so many other white redneck families have. Even though we are far more likely to have African ancestry than to have Native American ancestry. And it’s bc our white supremacist anti-government ancestors (who were likely pro slavery and pro segregation) romantically identified with the Cherokee people as this metaphor for living off the land like in the olden days and fighting against big government who was trying to take their land from them. It helped feed their anti-government far right and racist ideology back in the day. When I was a high schooler I was legitimately curious about my cultural background, as my family (much like most other white families in America whose ancestors gave up their mother cultures to assimilate into the idea of whiteness and receive its social benefits in America) didn’t really know much about where we came from. Both mom’s and dad’s sides assumed they were Scottish bc at the Highland games in Stone Mountain, Georgia (and of course it was at Stone Mountain, Georgia 🙄) they saw their families’ names on a specific kilt tartan pattern at a flea market table there. This of course is not a genealogy tree or anything. And southern whites also highly romanticize and fetishize Scottish people for many of the same reasons they romanticize and fetishize native Americans (rustic, virile, valorous strength in the face of a government cracking down on them). Both sides also thought they were Native American. I wanted to take a 23andMe DNA test to give me more insight into that bc I legitimately wanted to know more about where my family came from.... and I was applying to highly competitive colleges and wanted to see if I could claim Native American ancestry. I never took the tests, and I highly reconsidered the idea after I learned more about why affirmative action existed in the first place. And I’m beyond ashamed of myself for ever having thought that I’m in any way Native American, when only people with legitimate tribal connections who grew up within the cultures and traditions of being Native American and who suffered the associated discrimination of being Native American deserve to have the right to use those labels. And I’m thankful the better part of me won out when I was considering what race button to press on the common app. Whatever general curiosity I had about my own ancestors clearly became dwarfed by my desire to use a label which would be convenient for me to use for my own advancement in society. And thats clearly what motivated Warren, and she should be ashamed and she should apologize. Who knows if that helped her in the admissions process or with various job advancements. She’s had plenty of people say she was hired bc of the contents of her resume. And she’s certainly an accomplished woman and there is a lot about her to admire. She didn’t need to claim that, and it is really unfortunate and unbecoming that she chose to do that knowing very well the real discrimination that real Native Americans face. The Cherokee people have so much right to be angry at her and voice their frustrations and all white people need to listen carefully and learn from the horrible mistake she made. Fuck any white right wing person criticizing her about it though bc they should tend to the log in their own eye before tending to the log in hers, like how the policy positions they support are taking sacred tribal lands away from Native American people, are taking away their right to vote in places like North Dakota, are poisoning their water supplies, and are leaving schools and living situations on reservations in unconscionable conditions. But that exists entirely independently of the mistake that she made and should be criticized for until she renounces what she did, apologizes for it, and at least quadruples her efforts to use her political capital to explicitly help improve the lives of Native Americans. And idk where her bad deed exists on the continuum in comparison to what Northam/Herring did or what Steve King did nor do I think it’s my place to have an opinion on it. Idk if it’s even useful to compare shit like that. And idk what it means in terms of her being worthy of the office of president. Trump’s in there now and he’s racist beyond the pale of comparison, so she’d be better than him, but does that make her “good”? Idk if anyone is even “good.” Life is hard and the picture is always very complicated and sometimes thinking about all this shit makes me even more anxious and overwhelmed about life. But it’s like I’ve got to think about it bc people of color don’t get to just stop thinking about it when it discomforts them. And my discomfort in these discussion is far dwarfed by the discomfort of the actual racism they experience day in and day out. ❤️ Bless

I am not engaging with bootyfish, bc it’s clear to me all they want to do is make straw men and project a bunch of things that weren’t actually said onto other commenters. But I think you raise an interesting point. Of course she is not externally racist in the way David Duke is. But like only a fraction of people are virulently and overtly racist in a violent way like David Duke, and it’s not only people like Duke who are responsible for all the racism that people of color are experiencing in today’s society. I don’t even thing racism can be quantified, but i think it’s fair to say that all white people exhibit some degree of racist attitudes, beliefs, or behavior. That’s what our society has ingrained in us since birth. Like it’s impossible to exist in the culture we live in and not absorb a lot of the often subtle and intricate racist messaging we are all exposed to in various capacities by the people in our lives or the media or art we consume. The racism that a lot of white people myself included have to work through is the racist thoughts and biases and beliefs that exist in our subconscious and shape how we treat and view people of color in our society. And part of that I think means getting comfortable and used to the idea that we are all racist to some extent. People are so afraid of wrestling with that idea and just owning it and doing the reflection and self crit and and emotional work it takes to overcome that in whatever ways we can in our life so that we pass less and less of this generational sin onto the children of today. Like people—once again myself included— get so defensive that rather than deal with racist shit they do or say they shut down and all of a sudden everything becomes this referendum on who they are and what they stand for and the discussion becomes more about assuring everyone (and having everyone assure them) that they’re not racist. We deflect so much we don’t end up contending with the racist thing we said or did. I wish we (as in all of us white people) —for the third time myself included—would all work on that, and just accept us being racist as the fact of life that it is growing up as white in this social enviroment. Like of course what Katy Perry did in choosing to attach her name to those shoes is a racist thing. And of course she’s racist bc she grew up as a white person in America. But none of that is the be all end all and that she’s this irredeemable monster of a person. And she took the correct step in stopping selling these shoes. And she should follow that up with taking ownership of the decision and sincerely apologizing for it. Not giving an “I’m sorry if people were offended.” Style apology. And beyond that she should put in the work to use her platform to address racism and to lift up black talent etc. idk I’m not sure of all the ways for her to manifest anti-racism using her platform, and I’m for sure not the one to make the call on the correct way to act after doing something like this. But we’ve got to start doing more and we’ve got to stop relying on people of color to teach us and give us these “learning opportunities” to “grow and become better,” which makes racism about us and not the people who are affected by it. We’ve got to learn ourselves and do the work ourselves and hold our own accountable and manage our own insecurities about our subconscious with our own time and energy and resources. I’m done babbling. ❤️ Bless

RIGHT? Like ugh. I’m over these people needing “learning moments” for shit that we’ve all known was wrong since we were kids and learned in (even the very watered down, face-saving) American history classes we took from elementary school to high school. The Virginia governor and AG too. Northam said he would stay in power to help “heal” the state. Like why should the person who stabs you be the one who heals you? Dems need to find someone (preferably a woman of color in my opinion) who they can somehow appoint to the governorship in a planned series of resignations, or they just need to be humble and all resign, let the dumbass repub speaker have it for two years and beat his ass with someone worthy of the office in 2020. And Katy Perry needs to stop designing wack-ass shoes if she can’t do it without (whether actively ignorantly or just straight up intentionally (but altogether still racistly)) using racist iconography from the Jim Crow era! It’s so easy to be a white person and not darken your skin to appear another race for a costume. It’s so easy to be a white person and not pose in photographs either in straight up blackface or in a kkk uniform. It’s so easy to be a white person andnot put a face (especially one with big red lips intended to look goofy) on a black or brown background on a product or piece of art! ❤️ Bless

Coke I’m saying this with literally nothing but love. But not everyone who makes a comment or critique like that is constituting some referendum on everything you have done or what you stand for and who you are as a person. From all the stories you’ve posted, you’ve done honorable and commendable things both on behalf of your own kid and those you teach. That isn’t erased because someone thought a joke you made wasn’t in the best taste. And those experiences of yours don’t erase that this joke may rub people from certain backgrounds the wrong way. I’m a white non-immigrant, so I don’t feel it’s my place to make a ruling on the joke. But I think it’s worth taking what these people are saying about why that joke and jokes like it which were being made didn’t sit well with them, and just accept that regardless of the intentions behind it it didn’t sit well with them for reasons they outlined. Reflect on it, and if you think it’s valid criticism, apply it going forward. Or don’t. But I don’t think anything is being accomplished by presuming experiences or traumas or what have you that these commenters have or haven’t had. And I don’t think comparing our own traumatic experiences to others’ helps either. The underlying truth here that I think we should all agree on is that ICE does nothing but tear families apart and traumatize individuals who aren’t born here at the behest of a president and institutions of the state which are xenophobic and reflect broader racist attitudes held by far too many people in this country. It doesn’t keep us safe. It only harms. And it needs to go. ❤️ Bless

Being an ally isn’t about getting recognition. People shouldn’t be an ally bc they want marginalized ppl to give them a cookie when they do the right thing. They should do it bc it’s right. Fuck Lil Pump. Good on them for disavowing the song. Trecoolx has a point though about this phrasing. Conservatives use it all the time to claim they can’t be sexist and that they care about women when they constantly do shit to undermine women's rights. That criticism doesn’t mean he’s a bad person. But it’s not a bad thing to—and good allies should—reflect on how misogyny should matter to all of us regardless of what biological, marital, or romantic connections we have to women in our lives. Misogyny is a societal wrong that needs to be corrected, and it shouldn’t require men to have personal connections to women for that to happen. Being an ally involves listening. It involves reflection. It involves self-crit. It involves being uncomfortable at times. It doesn’t involve threatening or withholding support because marginalized people offer a valid criticism or don’t throw a parade when people do what they’re supposed to do to be a decent person. ❤️ Bless
