I've already made my argument clearly and concisely above, you can read through it again if you like. I also did it without insulting you (unless you think the suggestion that you still have things to learn is an insult, which would be pretty wild). Frankly I don't feel like putting any more energy into this conversation.
On a mostly unrealted side note I want to give a shout out, everything I've said in this thread I learned from listening to black people. I'd still be a "not all cops" guy if it weren't for them.
Man this has been an anti-cop movement from the start. People are protesting for systemwide police dismantling and reform. That's what this is all about.
I really suggest taking the time to read up on why this is happening what people hope to accomplish. Particularly from black people themselves. They're fighting a system that, by design, has been oppressing and killing them from it's inception. If they want to break shit I get.
You called anti-police attitudes childish but I think you're the one who could stand to be educated.
If you're nearby and doing nothing to try and protect the person getting shot then yes, you're an asshole. If you're not actively trying to protect people from other cops, you're not a good cop.
I agree this isn't about any one person's actions, but "fuck all cops" acknowledges that everyone has a responsiblity to fight oppression when they see it.
There are plenty of videos of those same cops tear gassing the people they were kneeling with not even an hour later. Or at least watching as other cops incite violence. Kneeling means nothing if they take no further action. Its an empty guesture.
What have these friends of yours done about the systematic racism and brutality that the system they work for enables and thrives on though? Are they still out there tear gassing innocent people? Are trying to stop their fellow officers from hurting people? Are they doing any activist work? Are they speaking up publically to condemn the system they support every day?
When people say "fuck all cops" its because every cop is either guilty or complicit. There's no way around it. A good cop would quit. A good cop wouldn't be a part of the current police force. A good cop would join one of the many community groups that strive to actually help people.
So, fuck all cops.
The idea that musicians have some inherent responsibility to learn music history is absurd. There are so many dudes out there with borderline encyclopedic knowledge of rock making the most boring music imaginable.
You should check out Nepenthe by Julianna Barwick, it was actually recorded in Sigur Ros' studio with Alex. Maybe one of the most beautiful albums of all time.
Honestly inspiring to have watched to commentariat move from openly complaining about CRJ coverage to willingly voting her into second place of the Song of the Summer poll.
I think the incredible short, barebones writeups for each song speak volumes. I've never seen the staff less enthused about something they seem obligated to cover.
I think the songs have all been great personally.
I don't think you're getting the full scope of their genius. It's like, you want it now right? But you have.... to wait. They've brilliantly folded the standard bloated press cycle into their message by, uh, doing the standard bloated press cycle.
Man that time signature change in the chorus is so close to taking off in a really cool way. I hope they record a studio version of this, it's got potential to be a real fuckin jam.
A bit of weirdly specific knowledge about a stranger: Phil and Genevieve met after his arctic cabin phase which was post-Microphones.
That said this album definitely casts a new light (or is it shadow?) on his older stuff. Break ups and conceptual thoughts about Big Ideas seem very different compared to actual overwhelming grief. I think there's still plenty of room for that stuff in a lifetime and all those older albums are still wonderful and thoughtful, but the callbacks to his older stuff on this album really drive home how much this death has completely upended every part of his reality.
