WHAT’S UP, GUMMERS? This was my first week back in the real world after my wedding and honeymoon, both of which went better than I thought possible. One of the great joys of the latter was driving across Kauai with my wife, listening to a seemingly endless bounty of excellent new music. Halsey and CHVRCHES were the favorites we returned to most. Now that we’re back, I’ve spent more solo with heavier and/or stranger revelations that aren’t her cup of tea, particularly Low (though she loves their earlier output) and Turnstile (TURNSTILE!). I can already tell that I’m going to associate all these albums with this surreally joyful time in my life, and I feel grateful for that. I wish you all love and music. Cheers.
I liked Lush a lot, but this I love. This song has TEETH!
The Halsey album is excellent, in case anybody hasn’t listened yet. Just stacked from top to bottom with fascinating and beautiful songs.
Jesus! The voice on her! Count me among Brittney Spencer’s newest fans.
I definitely would've lost my shit if that crescendo had culminated in an actual beat-drop, but even without it, this song feels cosmic and momentous, the introduction to something that will hopefully deliver that satisfaction. I'm in.
This guy really just said "say it to my face pussy" through an anonymous account on the internet! 7th grade forever, baby!
That's a deep cut! Great Jones Street is such a weird, great book.
Beautiful. The early melodies remind me of Plans-era Death Cab, but with more bite in the delivery. I just happened to be driving down through Oregon on the worst day of these fires, the landscape outside our windows looking entirely martian. So this resonates.
The Foxing chatter has essentially consisted of a handful of us wondering/asking if we missed the Foxing chatter. That’s a great record, and 737 is an incredible opener.
OH BOY! The new Killers is very, very good. Way darker, sadder, and more thematically interesting than any of their other records, with some of the best narrative lyrics Flowers has ever written. Between this and Imploding The Mirage, they are on a special late-career run.
They've truly spoiled us. I'm not even surprised by how great this is.
Weird silence, right? After all that coverage of the singles, I expected at least a streaming link here.
Fantastic column. As somebody who knows zero theory, the "pedal point" was something I'd noticed in music before but had never known how to describe/express. Also, HOLY HELL, what an an incredible song! I wouldn't have listened if not for this piece, so thank you.
This and 737 are the biggest revelations of the non-single tracks. The boys went for big air and landed it.
Nothing on the Foxing album, huh? Will have to wait and see how it stacks up against Nearer My God over time, but I’ve listed 2-3 times already and I think it’s truly special. A bit of a lull in the middle, but it starts and finishes as well as any album I’ve heard this year. Big-hearted, surprising, and ambitious. “Speak With The Dead” is even more mind-bending as an album closer than it was as a single. The imagery astonishes. Give it a listen, y’all.
The thing his voice does when he sings "generational anxiety" is holy.
