I am a 44-year-old guy, and somehow I know of all three referenced love triangle people??? My wife and I watched both "HSM:TM:TS" and the Netfilx movie "Work It" with Sabrina Carpenter; both very entertaining, light fare! I assumed HSM:TM:TS's Bassett was 10 or so years older than Rodrigo, though, so I would have never guessed they would date in real life, haha. This song is not bad, but I Iike Carpenter's fun little ditty from "Work It" quite a bit more; here it is if anyone is curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb0YDzXsltU
LittleShade, off for MLK Day, also likes "You Give Love a Bad Name." A little to my happy surprise, she give it "a 7 or an 8."
Great song! I love that was a point in time, relatively brief as it was, when high quality, accessible rock songs that weren't power ballads could actually make it to #1. Barney Stinson was right that this song can just bring your energy up if you let it. I love the groove in the song, too. The song holds up really surprisingly well over the years and still brings a fist-pumping, head-nodding smile to my face when I hear it 34 years later. I give "You Give Love a Bad Name" a 9.
LittleShade, remote schooling in the adjacent room, also did not like this song. She gives "Human" a "3 or a 4."
I am with Tom on this one. I am not a big fan of this song. The drum/percussion track is a little too prominent for me, and I agree that Oakley's vocals just don't mesh very well with this type of song/production. I give "Human" a 4.
That is so awful, Rabbits. I would have had the same reaction if the same thing happened to me. "El Scorcho" is an amazing song, though, and one I would definitely try (and probably do much more terrible than you).
Agreed, Justice. Amazing songs a great album. "Altered Beast" and "100% Fun" are also great.
Catching up, then: "Take My Breath Away" Berlin - Shade: 5; LittleShade: 3 "Stuck With You" Huey Lewis and the News - Shade: 5; LittleShade: 4 "When I Think of You" Janet Jackson - Shade: 5; LittleShade: "a 3 or a 4" "True Colors" Cyndi Lauper - Shade: 5; LittleShade: 4 (additional note: LittleShade really disliked Cyndi's intentionally child-like vocals, otherwise it might have ranked higher)
LittleShade, remote schooling in the adjacent room, had even stronger feelings about "Amanda," haha. She gives it a "2 or a 3" and dislikes it so much she retroactively bumped her rating of "True Colors" up from a 3 to a 4 due to how "it is so much better than 'Amanda,' and because the Trolls version of 'True Colors' is so good." (She then gave the Trolls movie "True Colors" "an 8 or a 9.")
Some 80's ballads (power or non-power) I like more than others, and coming down to how they hit me in my spirit. Unlike, say, "Against All Odds" or "Live to Tell," I have never really felt "Amanda." I think it has to do with the lyrics and antiseptic-type production, which just do not quite connect with me. I give "Amanda" a 4.
LittleShade, my nine-year-old daughter remote schooling in the adjacent room, did not like "When I Think of You." "Her voice is too quiet," she said. She gives it "a 3 or a 4."
I was a big fan of "What Have You Done For Me Lately," "Nasty," and "Control," and it's amazing how well they all have held up over the years. "When I Think of You," though, not so much. Those other 3 songs I heard all the time on the radio when they were out as singles, too, and WITOY did not get as much airplay, so I remember wondering why that was the one Janet Jackson song off "Control" that made it to #1. It's not a bad song, though, just kind of nondescript to me. I give "When I Think of You" a 5.
Welcome, kingraimundo! Great to have you!
11-year-old Shade was a big fan of the ABC Max Headroom TV show, DJEJak; loved it!
I hope everyone had a great holiday season! I was not able to visit Stereogum much during this time, but LittleShade, my nine-year old daughter remote schooling in the adjacent room, and I did keep up on our ratings. Here they are for the last several #1's since our last #1 ratings data dump: "Holding Back The Years" Simply Red - My Rating: 3; LittleShade Rating: 3 "Invisible Touch" Genesis - My Rating: 6; LittleShade Rating: "a 4 or a 5" "Sledgehammer" Peter Gabriel - My Rating: 7; LittleShade Rating: 5 (Note: She was NOT a fan of the video; too weird for her) "Glory of Love" Peter Cetera - My Rating: 4; LittleShade Rating: 6 "Papa Don't Preach" Madonna - My Rating: 3; LittleShade Rating: 3 "Higher Love" Steve Winwood - My Rating: 6; LittleShade Rating: "a 4 or a 5" "Venus" Bananarama - My Rating: 6; LittleShade Rating: 6 "Take My Breath Away" Berlin - My Rating: 5; LittleShade Rating: 3
For reasons I have never been able to truly comprehend, I am a massive fan of "Friends & Lovers." I just have a silly, huge grin on my face and can't help bopping my head & singing along with the chorus whenever I happen to hear it (including right now). It's a 9.
Good question! LittleShade, only one year younger than my age when I recorded this, likes hearing my old Top 10, and likes the songs as much as I currently do (and some, like “Ghostbusters” and “Greatest Love of All,” even more than I do). She also gives “Venus” a 6.
Happy New Year, TNOCS Commenters!  Back in 1986, a 10-year-old me bought his first blank 60-minute cassette tape, got out his new cassette-radio boombox, and, for the first and only time, recorded a 40-second audio clip where he counted down his top 10 favorite songs.    Circa ’86, “Venus” was a 10 and number 5 on my list of top 10 favorite songs. Circa 2021, it is still a fun, catchy song, but I haven’t exactly missed hearing it in the years since it was popular. I give “Venus” a 6. “Venus” is the last reveal from my 1986 top 10. To hear 10-year-old me and the full top 10 in all its glory, here is the original audio recording with some internet photos in the background. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/mAR15M83TzU
WOW, mt! What an amazing song and video; I am smiling ear-to-ear right now. That will get many rewatches by me. And Nancy Drew, of course!
The big question for me, though, is will anyone else give a ranking better than 5 for the song I gave a 9? I will be excited to find out!
