*(tonance = romance, by the way. I was scrambling to re-write this post for the third time after the first two got obliterated by the fucking ad refresh nonsense)
Another Bonus Beat, from another soundtrack album that was way better than its film:

This cover by the delightfully named Lick the Tins plays over the final scene/end credits of the Howard Deutch-directed/John Hughes-penned-and-produced 1987 teen romance Some Kind of Wonderful, a gender-swapped retread of the pair’s equally mediocre (but wonderfully soundtracked) 1986 teen tonance Pretty in Pink. At least PiP had a genuinely charismatic and enthusiastic cast to hide its flaws. No such luck on the second time around.
I know John Hughes is kinda sacrosanct (especially fir my generation), but yikes his films were pretty cruddy. And not just for the racist stuff. But he had pretty fabulous taste in scoring his films, so there’s that.
But don’t sleep on Title TK or Mountain Battles, either. Neither are as immediate as the first two or the most recent, but they both contain some of their finest songs!
Two major faves:
“Off you” from Title TK

“Overglazed” from Mountain Battles

Kim Deal singing the word “Oh!” is one of my all-time favorite sounds.
I’ve been cautiously optimistic about the new movie, but between this and the news that they got John Larroquette back to do the opening narration, I’ve upgraded to excited. I mean, there’s no way it can top or even equal the original, but the choices so far show both an absolute respect for and understanding of what made the original such a landmark.
” As it turns out, Doja’s “Celebrity Skin” cover sounds exactly like the original, if the original had been sung by someone with a less interesting voice who didn’t care that much about what she was singing.”
Nail on the head.
Becoming?
Actually, that’s an unfair comparison, as Jimmy Fallon has never produced anything of worth in his entire professional career. And yes, I’m including the Taxi remake.
Shout out to Rachel Brodsky for that main article, which is a hand guide for a list of bands I’ve never heard of but will assiduously avoid based on the descriptions. Thanks! 😀
