As a piano player, that second piece gives me anxiety at the thought of learning it. Kudos to the pianist!
Yeah, they got my hopes up for a Syracuse show with their lack of geographical knowledge.
I've got a bone to pick with whoever designed the art for this announcement getting my hopes up for nothing. Why put a dot over Syracuse, NY without an accompanying show?!?! I've gotta get a babysitter and do a 4.5 hour round trip drive if I want to go the Buffalo show on a Tuesday night. Clearly I've lost my edge or I'm too old for this shit or both....
I'll be that guy.... 1.5 listens in, and there's some moments I like, but no songs ever really come together for me, let alone the album as a whole. The drumming seems really plain for a what is supposed to be a virtuosic band. I get that she's singing at the same time and that isquite difficult, but I think for a rock/metal album with an emphasis on the musicianship, its just too simplistic a lot of the time (particularly when she's singing along). Can somebody sway my mind? I want to like this album, but it's just not clicking for me.
If they can provide an album of songs like 'Ring the Alarm' from Joey's last album then I'm so here for it, that song is still in my constant rotation.
The real question is, is the transaction a net positive for Mr. Chainz in terms of bag count?
But presumably he (or his label) had to drop a bag in order to ride on Grande's cultural coattails?
Oh. Hell. Yes. Queen Adrianne has blessed us today.
Oh hell yeah, we get an upstate NY stop!
Perhaps Claire Foy? Ezra confirmed fan of 'The Crown'?
I thought you were trolling, but you were in fact, not. Also, you most likely skipped forward, heard the vocals, then backtracked to find where they entered. But I imagined you listening to the loop for 59:54 entering into a trance then jolting awake when the vocals entered and that brought a smile to my face.
It is interesting see the heavy influence Lorde/Lana have on a few of these artists. You called it out on at least one blurb, but I'm undoubtedly hearing it on a few others...
Re: Headline I often wonder how many people consume music primarily in the album format these days and I get the feeling that I (and the commenters here) are in the minority in doing so, but is it 40/60? 10/90? Somebody do the research and data analysis and chart it up for me please. Also, while I love Deerhunter, the single strangest concert experience of my life was a Bradford Cox solo performance during my college days and I still hold it against him a little bit. Thats All.
Rumor is, Andre 3000 and Cardi already turned them down...
It's hard to get outraged that my favorite song isn't included when there's only 10 songs listed. Is it really that hard to let us see the top 25? The technology is too advanced?
Acting as if I didn't read the intro and merely came straight to the comments to argue..... *scrolls up slowly*
Daughters? Daughters.
Plus, if my wife likes it, that qualifies it as country in my opinion. So take that, internet.
Makes me want to downvote just to see how far you'd go in calling out the haters...
I only used the term 'Woke Country' because the article above did. There's got to be a better term for it haha
Yeah, you're right. Soul is probably more accurate, but there's some undeniable Southern Rock influences in my opinion. I saw him in March or April and he did put on a hell of a show.
You're probably right, but I figured with his Nashville connections (his brother Dave is the producer for all 'woke country' artists mentioned in the article above). I figured he'd at least get mentioned here, but nope.
Also, great write-up Mr. Deusner.
Kacey Musgraves is great and downvote me to oblivion if you need to, but that album is Pop and no amount of CMA's can change my mind. As far as favorite country albums this year goes my list is: 1) Brent Cobb 2) Anderson East 3) Pistol Annies Yes, I'm aware that Brent and Anderson are more 'Southern Rock' than Country, but if Sturgill is Country so are those guys. Also, Brent Cobb not getting more press is a travesty that I can only keep quiet about for so long. This is an aside, but Mrs. Rentaballoon has forced country music into my life more than I'd like to admit or even thought possible. As such, I have opinions about Country music lists, andthat fact in itself is forcing me into some tough self-evaluation.
I was a bit disappointed in some of my most looked forward to jazz albums this year (GoGo Penguin, Esperanza and a few others), so my outlook on 2018 in Jazz is a bit skewed. However the three I've probably enjoyed the most are your top two albums and then the Logan Richardson album. I just love the use of electric guitar in Logan's work and he's probably my favorite of the younger generation of saxophonists (along with Colin Stetson). Appreciated the writeups all year Phil and I'll have to dig in to the few on this list I haven't yet got to.
While i love that Wye Oak record, not enough for it to be 2&4. 4 is supposed to be FJM.... the preview screen on the comments is too damn small!
1) Parquet Courts - Wide Awake! Genuinely surprised to not see this getting more love this list season. Encapsulates a lot of what i feel like as an average 27 year old white guy in today's climate. May not be a sexy viewpoint, and there are undoubtedly a lot more voices that need a lot more amplification than mine, but still felt political and personal at the same time. Add to that the serious bops contained herein and it's my AOTY. 2) Wye Oak - The Louder I Call, the Faster it Runs 3) Denzel Curry - Ta13oo 4) Wye Oak - The Louder I Call, the Faster it Runs 5) Lucy Dacus - Historian 6) Kids See Ghosts - s/t 7) Pinegrove - Skylight 8) Sidney Gish - No Dogs Allowed 9) Playboi Carti - Die Lit 10) The Beths - Future Me Hates Me
Atlantic is still a great song, As for the rest, I have bad news for law school you...
Perhaps it's rose-tinted nostalgia glasses, but Hopes and Fears was really important (perhaps too much so) to a 12-year old me. And there's still a few songs from it that I'll throw on select playlists.
There's something about the first verse into chorus that just screams Chainsmokers feat. Halsey. Not loving how pop-minded their stuff has become...
As a lifelong Syracuse, NY resident, she lost me when she pronounced our fair city 'Seeeeracuse'. It's correctly pronounced 'Sarah-cuse', keep your high-tootin artsy-fartsy stuff on the west coast. That said, this is a gorgeous album!
She had my interest, now she has my on the edge of my seat. Looks fun, but I can't help but see Damon Albarn involved and hope it doesn't turn out like the last Gorillaz album.
The 26 year old me is still excited to hype this to my parents/friends. No shame.
You say 'has merits', but comparing Gogo Penguin to Coldplay and Calvin Harris in the same paragraph still feels like a personal attack on my character has a music snob. Thanks as always for the bevy of stuff to dig into!
What an ....unfortunate.... mountain to die on.
One of these things is not like the others..... (hint: it starts with J and ends with ames Blake)
What I think about the song aside, the idea that he's presenting here (re: saying nothing is sometimes the best thing to do, especially given Justin's social status) is at least a bit more in touch than the video for "Supplies" was. The fact that these two extremes exist within a week of eachother just goes to show how incoherent the album is going to feel. All that aside, the song is simply okay, best so far. But given my love for Chris Stapleton's album(s) last year (in that I listened to them a TON while renovating my house), I'm a little annoyed that this is the format he's going to get a bigger (re: pop-friendly) audience with.
