Is everybody in the music industry a bunch of pagan devil-worshipping satanic-cultists? I now have to assume yes.
I mean obviously it's all about SPOON this week, but wait VUNDABAR?? How did I miss they had a new one coming out too? And they got "Devil" in their album title to Spoon's "Lucifer." Nice. https://media.giphy.com/media/77f2SrKYNOnYs/giphy.gif
Pretty sure Britt's MO is: release top-quality shit or....release nothing at all. Which is fine by me, although 5 years between releases has been rough.
3/3* *Or 4/4 if "Satellite" sounds the same as it did when they played it live on the They Want My Soul tour. I only heard it that one time, but man it was good. Also, I kinda want Spoon to make a bad song at some point, just to prove they are also mere mortals like we, with flaws, and not gods.
One of the best bands around, and it sounds like their consistent weird/brilliant style is intact here. Re-Animator was a highly underrated 2020 album! And in an era where every new indie rock album seems to have 8-10 songs max, what a joy to see this will be 14. Almost a double album!!!
I didn't know the Gum was so indifferent to them, I must have missed it over the years. Wasn't AOTW, no PE, not even in Heavy Rotation or a "Stream ____ New Album" article, the bare minimum. Ouch. No one here likes them....? Strange. Other site liked it a lot though. So do I, so far!
Anyone else enjoy the two new Papercuts songs this week? (New album 4/1 by the way!) I'd say I'm surprised the Gum didn't mention the new songs or album announcement, but they literally haven't mentioned them at all in over a decade, since Fading Parade. Life Among the Savages is where they checked out, for shame! Love that album. But then again, I like everything they've done, and the 2 new songs are in the same wheelhouse so thumbs up from me.
Picking only 5 is tough and I'm biased AF but it's so purrtyyyy
Daniel Rossen tho
And they said Fraggle Rock was dead! Pffft!
Aw.... Well, hell of a run. And Painted Ruins is a high note to go out on for sure. One of the best albums of 2017, songs hold up.
Speaking of Spoon, everyone see they're touring with Geese this Spring? I dunno how we feel about Geese around here, I only just discovered them personally, but they're def a tight new band. A liiiitle bit of Everything Everything in the singer's voice, which helped clinch it for me.
Ahh I like the instrumentals for the Fontaines song a lot, very up my alley, but the vocals... ehhh... bleh. And I'm allowed to say that, I'm part Irish.
black sheep boy Ugh this is so good I'm gonna cry. See you at #1 on the 5 Best Songs of the Week column on Friday. 01/11/22 12:15 PM Wow I can predict the future! Another prediction: The new Spoon album will be great (and probably still score under an 8 from the other site)
Nah #1 is right.
They are good. I was surprised to see Clay from 13 Reasons Why was in the band but hey whatever, it's good stuff. They have a song with Clairo, she's popular right? Good song.
black sheep boy About a month out and no 2nd single yet? Where's it at?? 01/6/22 12:44 PM Ask and ye shall receive. Ugh this is so good I'm gonna cry. See you at #1 on the 5 Best Songs of the Week column on Friday.
12 acts listed ahead of Spoon, and among them are.... Twenty One Pilots and... Greta Van Fleet.... Disgraceful.
About a month out and no 2nd single yet? Where's it at??
The Burial guy should use the baby-face Snapchat filter for his album cover.
Ha, yeah, Snapchat filters are fun! The Weeknd gets it.
My benign dig gets #1 most down-voted, neat.
That's OK, you don't have to make any more.
Sam Evian—Time To Melt is one of the best albums of the year, thank you Sufjan. It'd be on my Top 10 if I made an "official" list. So good.
Aw no Deerhunter... or Atlas Sound... or Lotus Plaza (ha he's never making another album is he?) I feel like Deerhunter is gonna be another Grizzly Bear situation where they just quietly break up/stop making new music, but I really hope not
Wasn't aware of that, what's it called and when's it coming out? His Silent Hour/Golden Mile EP in 2012 was excellent. Those were 5 Grizzly Bear-level songs as far as I'm concerned.
It's more and more rare these days that I find a brand new band I like/love, and Flasher is one of those acts. I loved Constant Image and can't wait to hear what comes next.
25 acts listed ahead of Spoon, and one is the 1975... that's a good one. You guys almost got me with that
Spoon being #1 is always a safe bet.
I appreciate the Gum acknowledging Night Moves' existence......in a list with 200 other bands.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I just feel very Twilight Zone-y every time I see something that sounds so... blehh to me get so much love, enough to be considered one of the 10 best of the year. I'll just have to accept I don't get it, and that's fine.
Why is Black Country, New Road considered good music? Honest question.
I don't even know what came out this year, I think most of these did? No particular order...
