Comments from black sheep boy

Yes, I consider Mutilator (and Drop too) as part of their Golden Era. Not as good as Carrion-Putrifiers-Floating Coffin, but as good as/better than Master's, Help, etc. which are all kinds of awesome.

I should have read the whole thing before posting my knee-jerk reaction! ""Here’s this super consistent band who maybe last time had a slight misstep,” referring to Transference. That was this overriding press narrative at the time and it kinda drove me nuts. I had sort of peripherally listened to Spoon when I was younger, but the moment I really got into the band actually coincided with Transference." Obviously you appreciate it as well, but I think it's up for debate when it comes to TWMS vs Transference...

"Dan had also talked about this masterplan: reunited Wolf Parade album, second Operators album, and a second Divine Fits album. So, the others have materialized …" Oh baby don't tease me! I think I'd be more curious to see a Divine Fits LP2 over a new Spoon LP, if only by a hair, and b/c the new Operators (and most recent Wolf Parade) were f'ing great.

"even as you might be tempted to say Spoon in fact released one of their finest albums this decade (that’d be They Want My Soul)" Yeah. Or, ya know, TRANSFERENCE.

Everything from The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In through Mutilator Defeated at Last is golden. Especially the trifecta of Carrion-Putrifiers-Floating Coffin, their peak. Exits and Entrances were both... OK. Not feeling the post-Thee stuff so far. Wish they'd go back to that Floating Coffin shit, son!

I’m all about Hot Chip, Two Door Cinema Club, Titus Andronicus*, and, I missed this earlier but just learned, new Fruit Bats as well this weekend! Got all the bases covered, from smooth white dude R&B, to sugary sweet falsetto indie-pop, to energized punk rock, to melodic folk-rock. Plus we got a whole new Spoon song this week. What more could a black sheep boy ask for? *I only listened to snippets of each song last night but An Obelisk sounded sooOOooOO much better than A Productive Cough that it really got me excited, and a bit ashamed of myself as I was about to write them off after that last one… That woulda been a mistake.

"spoon are another the national for me" Is that a good thing or a bad thing....? I don't know your feelings on The National. B/c Spoon are ALSO another The National for me, as in they are both in my Top 5 Current Bands list (even thought I Am Easy To Find was kinda meh...)

0. Spoon - No Bullets Spent I didn't get a chance to listen to it at work when the article came out, so I couldn't comment on it in the article, but it's another great addition to Spoon's ever-growing impeccable catalog. It's been in my head the past couple days and it ain't goin' anywhere.

It is impossible. The Stereogum staff STILL haven't attempted it, and I can't even blame them. Looking at my list now that I made 2 years ago, I'm already shaking my head, ready to make changes.

"Rent I Pay" is a great song (I'd say that about all their songs though, I am biased), but is it better than basically the ENTIRETY of Kill the Moonlight and Girls Can Tell? No.

They also could have spread the love between albums a bit more evenly. Not to be picky, but... here's me being picky: GaX5 and TWMS get 3 cuts each, GF gets 2, and GCT, KTM, Transference, and Hot Thoughts only get 1 each. Now it's hard to argue those 3 GaX5 cuts. In fact, they probably could have put a 4th and 5th song from that album. But They Want My Soul? Remove "Rent I Pay" and give Kill the Moonlight or GCT a 2nd track.

I guess it's to try to pull in some new fans? Never too late! Britt kind of alludes to where his mind was at if you read the above: The idea of doing a best-of came to us a couple times. First I wasn’t sure how I felt about it but at some point I remembered that when I got my first Cure record it was Standing On A Beach. When I got my first New Order record, it was Substance. That was how I met those bands, and I moved backwards from there but I still listen to those comps. I love a greatest hits LP when it’s done well. It can be a thing unto itself. Imagine you (somehow) never heard Spoon before, and then you come across this Greatest Hits comp.... https://media.giphy.com/media/l0IypeKl9NJhPFMrK/giphy.gif

This was my list from around when Hot Thoughts came out: 10.) "The Mystery Zone" 9.) "Paper Tiger" 8.) "Written in Reverse" 7.) "Black Like Me" 6.) "The Beast and Dragon, Adored" 5.) "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb" 4.) "Inside Out" 3.) "The Way We Get By" 2.) "The Underdog" 1.) "I Turn My Camera On" The Next 5 (Honorable Mentions): "Metal Detektor" "Everything Hits at Once" "Don't You Evah" "Do You" "All I Got Is Me" I got 8 right! I had also considered adding "Hot Thoughts" but it was too new at the time, but now 2+ years later, yeah, it's still killer. I am a little surprised to see “I Summon You” and “Got Nuffin” over arguably better songs from each of those albums (“My Mathematical Mind”, “Written in Reverse”, “The Mystery Zone”) but even so, those are still two essential Spoon songs. But then again, aren’t they all?

Any Aan fans here? Small lil' indie rock band, so probably not, but if you've ever liked any of my suggestions check out their new album that came out yesterday, Losing My Shadow. The singer has a sort-of unusual voice, if you're into that kinda stuff, which I always am,

Not sure why Local Natives and Foals came and went with, like, no fanfare. They're both semi-veteran indie bands at this point (once you get to 4+ albums, right?) with a nice catalog of some pretty amazing songs, and their newest efforts were mostly just as good as their previous work. I'd prefer their albums to most of the stuff listed above, but yeah, sure, Maren Morris is better...

They don't belong on here either, but they're not really in my wheelhouse so it's hard for me to judge objectively, I suppose. I'd replace The National with Deerhunter, Cass McCombs, Steve Gunn, or obviously, the Twilight Sad. THEY all made better albums than The National (and fucking Vampire Weekend).

June 11, 2019 on The 50 Best Albums Of 2019 So Far
I've been having a problem in 2019 with liking FULL albums, every song, start to finish. Even Deerhunter and The National, two of my current Top 5's, have albums with a song or 2 (or 8 or 9, in The National's case....) that I either plain don't like or even kinda hate. But Andrew Bird dropped 10 beautiful little songs and I enjoy every single one. I think the Twilight Sad is the only other album this year with 100% success rate for me. Pond could have been a contender, but I just really don't like 3 or 4 songs, almost half the album. Foals and Local Natives had a handful of good songs each. Mac Demarco.... not even close. Even Wand had a couple songs that left me cold and I left out of my music library. So yeah, I have to give Bird credit for being one of the only full LP's I enjoyed this year. And HELLO it's got an 80 on Metacritic, what more do you want!?!

1 - I love The National (Top 5!) but that album doesn't belong on here. 2 - Wand made the cut, and rightfully so! 3 - No Deerhunter? Has to be an oversight... 4 - Fuck outta here with Vampire Weekend at #1 5 - The Twilight Sad made a better album this year than like 95% of this list. But I understand, no one on the staff personally likes them, so... Some other snubs - Steve Gunn, Cass McCombs, Andrew Bird (it seriously is his finest work yet, where's the love!?)
